Commentary

In this verse, there is a warning for the ignorant people that they bow toward that side where they observe their immediate benefit. They adopt such things or persons as gods which/who do not, but cannot prevent them from following own desires.

It is commanded: Ask from them: If the sun is stopped from rising or its light becomes dimmed and all sources of light are lost, and the night spread in the world always continuous until the Day of Resurrection, or on the contrary, the time of day remains continuous forever until the Day of Resurrection, and the night does never come for rest and quietude, then is there anyone of your chosen gods who may bring night or light? Not at all! None has any such Power save Allaah Almighty. If you cannot think concerning this little matter then either you are blind that nothing can be seen by you or you are deaf that you are told but you do not understand.

Commentary

khiyaratu – (choice, option, preference), this word has been derived from ‘ikhtiyaar, which means “like, control, election, authority etc.”

tukinnu – (is hidden), this word has come out from ‘iknaanun, from which kinnun has been derived. Kinnun means “to conceal, hiding”.

It is commanded: The mankind should not remain fallen into this mania that goodness or badness of any matter or thing depends on his decision. Not at all! Allaah Almighty is, Who created everything and He is; Who decides concerning goodness and badness of it. The mankind cannot decide in this matter that what is good and what is bad. The person, who considers that what he likes is good, is a polytheist. Allaah Almighty is Exalted and High above all what anyone associates with Him. He is Pure from any kind of weakness. He knows everything even that what is hidden in the breasts of the mankind and what they disclose. None save Him is able to be a God (Worshipped). Everything of the world and the Hereafter is busy in His Praise and has been saying by its condition or tongue that entire Excellences are for Him only. His Decision is the Final Decision. You all will go back to Him and will be standing before Him with folded hands.

67.  Fa-‘ammaa  man  taaba  wa  ‘aamana  wa  ‘amila  saalihan  fa-‘asaaa  ‘any-yakuuna  minal-Muflihiin.

Commentary

Fa-‘ammaa – (will be unapparent, will be dimmed, will disappear),

When the Idolaters will be asked concerning the Oneness of God Almighty and they will fail in replying, then except it that they had to repent due to going astray during their worldly life, they will weep bitterly that: Would that we had gotten guidance in the world. At that time, they will be able to do nothing, then another question will be asked from them: Tell! Why did you not obey the Sayings of Our Messengers (peace be upon them)?

Therefore, it is commanded: On the Day of Resurrection, Allaah Almighty will say to them: Speak! What answer did you give to Our Messengers (peace be upon them) who were sent in the world to convey Our Message for your guidance? After hearing this question, the Infidels will become out of their senses. They will forget all such talks which they used to say against Islam. Even they will not have so much sense that they may ask one another among themselves that what answer of this question should be given.

After describing such worst condition of the Infidels on the Doomsday, it is commanded: Deliverance on the Day of Judgment depends on it that the mankind should leave rebellion in this world, should not be slave of own desires, believe in Allaah Almighty, should not ascribe plurality to Him, obey all good Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and choose that Path toward which he guides, and refrain from those matters from which he prevents. Such people should hope that they would be successful on the Day of Resurrection.

Commentary

Tabarra’-naaa – (We declare our disassociation, we have no connection), this word is from tabarrii, which means “to show oneself disconnected, displeasure, to deny from acceptance of responsibility”.

Those who led the Idolaters to error, that is to say, the Disciples of Satan, will say before Allaah Almighty: Our Lord! All astray people are before You. It is right that apparently we led them to error, because we ourselves were astray. What could we do? But in fact, this blame is not liable to come upon us, because we did not compel them that they should choose our way. We spoke of only one mischief and they began to follow us for fulfilling their sensual desires. We deny before You that we were their gods (worshipped). They were not our adorers but slaves of their own wishes. It was the reason that we got opportunity of our success upon them. If their sensual desires had not excited them, they would have rejected us certainly and chosen the Straight Path.

When Human and Jinn Disciples of Satan will complete their statement, then the Idolaters will be said: Invoke your gods to save yourselves; to whom you had chosen supporters for fulfilling your desires. These Disciples of Satan have declared that they had no relationship with you.

Then they will call their idols and gods etc. bowing before which with humility; they used to ask for boons. They will be tired of calling them repeatedly, but they will not give them any answer, because at first they were unaware of it that they used to adore them instead of Allaah Almighty. Suppose if even they were aware, they were displeased from their such acts.

Meantime, the Doom will come before the eyes of the Idolaters. After looking the Doom they will lose their senses and they will say: Would that we had chosen the Right Path in the world.

Commentary

Muhza-riina – (presented, arraigned), this word is plural of muhzar which is Passive Participle from ‘ihzaar. Hazuur means “the presence”. Haazir means “Present, in attendance”. ‘Ihzaar means “Attendance”. Muhzar means “Royal presence, the criminal who is arrested by Police and produced before a Ruler/Judge.

Haqqa  ‘alay-himul-Qawlu – (Those upon whom the Word will have come into effect).

‘Agwaynaa – (we led to error), this is in Past Tense from the word ‘igwaa-‘un, which has come out from gayyun. Gayyun means “going astray”. ‘Igwaa-‘un means “to mislead, to lead astray”.

It is commanded: Being proud of worldly things in possession is entirely ignorance. The person who obeyed Our Commandment and We promised to give him a good reward, shall get it certainly on the Day of Resurrection. Can he be equal to that for whom We provided enjoyment of worldly life, he enjoyed and after some period he died, but then he is, on the Day of Resurrection, among those presented before Us as a wrongdoer and for punishment in the Hell?

Allaah Almighty will ask from the Idolaters on the Day of Resurrection: Why did you do wrong? Where are your so-called gods whom you used to ascribe plurality to Allaah? Before all of them, the Disciples of Satan, who were involved in misleading the mankind, will say immediately: Our Lord, these are the ones for whom we are blamed that we led to error.

Commentary

Previously it was commanded: How much ignorant are these Infidels of Makkah who fear that the people of Arab will become their enemies and they will banish them from the Country, whereas they could not exile them so far; notwithstanding their enmity, because Allaah Almighty has established the Land of Makkah respectable and pure from any danger, and He has made such arrangement that produce of every kind has been coming from all around as provision for them without any hard labor. But they do not fear Allaah Almighty Who has destroyed many nations before them in punishment of their disobedience. Their townships have been lying ruined around these people.

Then it is commanded: We never destroy the townships until We send to their chief cities a Messenger (peace be upon him) reciting to them Our Revelations and inform them concerning the Truth. But when in-spite of causing to understand they do wrong constantly, do not believe, their oppressions and rebellion increase, then We ruin them. The people should understand it carefully that they cannot live in the world always because the death is irresistible.

Then why these people have been falling in love with the things of luxurious enjoyment? These things are only for reaping timely advantages and elegance of this world. These will remain here. That, what is with Allaah Almighty, is better than these things and more lasting. Why do you not use your sense so that you may prefer those things instead of worldly things?

(28:59) And never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother a messenger reciting to them Our verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers. (28:60) And whatever thing you [people] have been given – it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?

Commentary

Yujbaaa  ‘ilayhi – (is brought towards it), this word is from jab-yun, which means “to collect, to gather”. It aims that fruits and productions etc. are brought towards this Holy Place.

Batirat – (they used to boast), it is in Past Tense from the word batara, which means “boasting, to strut”.

Ma-‘iisha-ta – (the means of livelihood),

For obeying not the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), Infidels of Makkah made this excuse: If we were to follow the Guidance with you; we would be carried off from our land.

They have been replied in this verse. It is commanded: The people of Arab treat This Square Building (Ka’-bah) with respect. Due to this sacred Building you are in a safe Place. Allaah Almighty is Who has arranged for your safety also. Will He give up defending you if you will obey His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)? Behold! The fruits of all things are brought to this safe Sanctuary by Him from everywhere. This provision is given to you by Him. Do you not know that if you will take his side then consequently Allaah Almighty will make your condition better than present? Listen! Do you fear people? You should fear Allaah Almighty Who destroyed those townships, the people of which were disobedient and who were proud of their prosperity. Their houses have become ruins. They died leaving all means of livelihood. And then Allaah Almighty was the Owner and the Inheritor of all left over things.

56.  Lo! Thou (O Muhammad) guidest not whom thou lovest, but Allah guideth whom He will. And He is Best Aware of those who walk aright.

57a.  And they say: If we were to follow the Guidance with thee we should be carried off from our land.

55b.  wa  qaaluu  lanaaa  ‘a’-maalunaa  wa  lakum  ‘a’-maalukum;  Salaamun  ‘alaykum;  laa  Nabtagil-jaahiliin.

56.  ‘Innaka  laa  tahdii  man  ‘ahbabta  wa  laakinnAllaaha  yahdii  many-yashaaa’.  Wa  Huwa  ‘A’-lamu  bil-muhtadiin.

57a.  Wa  qaaluuu  ‘in-nattabi-‘il-Hudaa  ma-’aka  nutakhattaf  min  ‘arzinaa.

Commentary

Nutakhattaf – {we would be swept (carried off)}, this word has come out from takhattufun, which means “to take away, to be swept”.

It is part of the previous verse. Allaah Almighty commands: When they hear vanity they withdraw from it and get rid of those who do useless works; saying to them: “For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. We say, forgive us, peace be upon you. We don’t wish to keep any relationship with those who do not use their sense”.

In these verses, it has been indicated towards those four persons who were from the People of the Scripture, came from Syria and Abyssinia (name of a Country situated in Africa), and they embraced Islam after hearing the Revelations of Holy Qur’an. When they were returning, the people of Makkah made insinuations about them, and they replied the same which has been mentioned in this verse.

Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) used to grieve that the people come from foreign Countries and embrace Islam, but his own relatives do not admit his Sayings. In this regard, it is commanded: O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): You cannot guide whom you like. Your responsibility is to convey the Message of Allaah Almighty only. That will find guidance to whom He wills.

One objection of the Infidels of Makkah was that: O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): All people of Arab will exile us from this Country if we shall obey your Sayings and follow the teachings of your Islam.

Commentary

Yadra-‘uuna – (they repel, they avert), origin of this word is dar-‘un, which means “to remove, to repel, to push back”. Here it aims “to take precautions, to provide against”.

It was commanded earlier: Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it, they believe in this Qur’an as soon as they listen to it. Now it is commanded: When those people, who are best aware of old Scriptures, hear reciting the verses of this Scripture; that is to say Holy Qur’an; from the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) or other Muslims, they begin to say spontaneously, “we believe in this Scripture, this Book is a mine of the Truth which our Lord has bestowed to us. We already believe in it because there is mention concerning it in old Scriptures and it has already been verified”.

It is commanded: Due to such admission, they will be given double reward, one for having belief in the old Scriptures, and secondly; acceptance of this Scripture (Holy Qur’an) and having belief in it. It is the conduct of these people that they avert evil through good; that is to say; they behave well with those who misbehave, repent immediately from committing the sins, spend in good works and turn away when they hear ill speech.

Commentary

WassalNaa – (We conveyed), it is a Past Tense from the word tawsiil, which has been derived from wasal. Wasal means “to unite” and tawsiil means “to unite with each other”. Here it aims “to convey repeatedly, to cause to reach”.

It is commanded: The person, who followed own desires and engaged himself to fulfill them, day and night, has gone astray entirely. Worldly wishes should be fulfilled; remaining under those limits which Allaah Almighty has fixed. Only such desires should be fulfilled, for which and how much He has granted permission. But Alas! The mankind rejects the Commandment of Allaah Almighty against his desire.

It is commanded: We have left no stone unturned to send Our Commandments towards them. We sent Our Prophets (peace be upon them) one by one towards all people and conveyed Our Word repeatedly. In this connection, We have sent Our last Prophet {Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} along with Our last Scripture (Holy Qur’an). Circumstances of all ancient nations and the Prophets (peace be upon them) have been mentioned in it correctly, so that it should be sufficient for the guidance of the entire human beings till the last Day. The people to whom We gave the Scripture before it – certainly they shall believe in Holy Qur’an.
