Commentary

Sha-‘aaa-‘irAllaahi – (the offerings consecrated to Allah, the symbols of Allaah), it aims: Appointed things and ways of the devotion of Allaah Almighty. The Square Building at Makkah, going around it, endeavoring – Safaa and Marwah, the beasts separated for sacrifice which are called Had-yun, and Masaajid (Mosques) etc – these entire are included in Sha-‘aaa-‘irAllaahi.

It is commanded: The person who ascribed any partner unto Allaah Almighty, he went astray. His state is as if an individual had fallen from the place which was very high. Certainly he would die. Then either carrion-eater birds can snatch the flesh of his body or the wind can blow him to a far-off place.

Found from it is that confusions and misfortunes will enclose the person from all around and his wishes will ruin him, who disbelieved in Allaah Almighty and regarded to any other than Him. It is compulsory to regard the things and Symbols which Allaah Almighty has appointed for His devotion. Whosoever honors the Sha-‘aaa-‘irAllaahi (the offerings consecrated to Allah, is His obedient servant. For example, you reap advantage from the beasts, but if you appointed them for sacrifice for the sake of Allaah Almighty, then that particular beast has been included in the offerings consecrated to Allah and it should be brought to the Holy Place at Makkah for sacrificing, which is Allaah’s Appointed Ancient House.

31a.  Hunafaaa-‘a  Lillaahi  gayra  mushrikiina  biH.

Commentary

HurumaaTillaahi  – (the sacred commands of Allah), Hurumaat is plural of hurmatun. In accordance with Quranic phraseology, every Commandment of Allaah Almighty, whether that is “‘Amr-bil-Ma’roof (ordering for acknowledged virtues) or Nahii  ‘anil munkar (forbidding from the sin”, is called “a sacred thing”. The aim from HurumaaTillaahi is “rijsa   minal-‘awsaani” (the filth of idols). The word “min” in the verse describes that the filth is “idols themselves”. “Bowing before idols and worldly things instead of Allaah Almighty” is filth and impureness”.

Zuura – (a lie), every self-fabricated and self-invented matter is called “zuur” because that is always away from the gist, and the people are deceived by it. These are the meanings of the origin of this word.

After describing about benefits and acts of the Pilgrimage, it is commanded: You should keep these sacred commands in mind and listen again that the commands of Allaah Almighty are full of benefits whether those are “ordering for acknowledged virtues” or “forbidding from evil deeds”. The person who will treat these commandments with respect, he will do such work which will be consequently very good in the Sight of Allaah Almighty. It is Grace of Allaah Almighty upon you that save some beasts; entire cattle have been made lawful unto you. You should be thankful to Him on this favor in like manner that you should worship only Allaah Almighty and sacrifice the cattle on His name. You should never ascribe any partner unto Him. You should shun the filth of idol-worshiping. Sacrificing the cattle on the names of others than Allaah Almighty, giving false evidence and deceiving other people are evil deeds, so you should escape from such works.

29.  Summal-yaqzuu  tafasahum  wal-yuufuu  nuzuurahum  wal-yat-tawwafuu  bil-Baytil-‘Atiiq.

Commentary

Liyaqzuu – {they should make an end (of)}, this is a word of command for the third person plural from qazaa’, which means “to finish the work after completion, to put to an end”. Here it aims “to come out from ‘Ihraam (Act of interdicting).

Tafasun – (unkemptness), during the state of ‘Ihraam; the hair and nails etc. increase. To make an end of unkemptness means that they should come out from the state of ‘Ihraam by cutting their increased hair and nails, and wear their normal dress.

Nuzuuru – (their vows), it is plural of the word “nazar”. Nazar means “every that work for which one has made a vow that he will perform it for the sake of Allaah Almighty”. Here it aims “Pillars of Hajj (Pilgrimage) and sacrificing the cattle”.

It is commanded: There are many great benefits of gathering of the people at an appointed time, date and place, which cannot be reaped by dwelling far off separately. The actual benefit is “Perception of concord, union, obeying Commands of Allaah Almighty aggregately and collective power is produced by assembling of all and turning attention unto Allaah Almighty. The mankind gets opportunity of mentioning the name of Allaah Almighty during the sacrificing of the cattle which He has bestowed upon them”. It is suitable if one eats the meat of the cattle oneself and feeds the poor and needy people from it. After completion of the Pilgrimage, one should come back in the normal dress from ‘Ihraam and go around the Square Building.

Commentary

Rukka-‘is-Sujuud – (Rukka-‘in is plural of Raaki’, which means “the person who bows), and (Sujuudi is plural of Saajid, which means “the person who makes prostration)

Rijaalan – (moving on foot), it is plural of Raajilun, which has been derived from rajalun. Rajalun means “to go forth on foot”. Raajilun means “the man who moves on foot”.

Fajjin – (Ravine –deep hollow between hills), plural of this word is fijaajun, which has passed in Suratul-‘Ambiyaaa’ (Chapter 21).

‘Amiiqun – (deep), origin of this word is ‘umqun, which means “depth, the path which leads far off; is also called ‘amiiq.

Ya’-tiina – {those (lean camel) come}.

It was described in the previous lesson that preventing the people, who come unto the Inviolable Place of Worship for worshiping, is transgression. Masjidil-Haraam (the Inviolable Place of Worship) is that entire courtyard, which has been surrounding the Square Building at Makkah. In this verse, there is mention concerning the Foundation of the Square Building.

It is commanded: The Place of the Holy House (the Square Building) was constructed by Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) and We had indicated him concerning the correct Place of its construction. And We said: This Square Building will be built here on the condition that none should be adored here save Allaah Almighty. It should be purified from the evil act of infidelity and plurality, so that the slaves of Allaah Almighty may stand, bow and make prostration before their Lord. Proclaim among the entire human beings that they should come here for its Pilgrimage on foot and riding on lean camels from all around, whether they live near this place or come from very far off area.

(Section 3)

Commentary

‘Al-baad – (nomad, one who roams from place to place, wanderer, foreigner etc.), actually this word is ‘al-baadii which is the Subject from bad-wun. Bad-wun means “villages; and movement from any village toward the township”.

‘Ilhaadi – (to go forth crooked, to bend, to incline, to turn), this word has passed in Suratun-Nahl (Chapter 16).

It was commanded that the people, who disbelieve in Allaah Almighty, do not live in peace. They create disputes against the Believers because the person, who believed in Allaah Almighty, would never listen to any disbeliever. It is the reason that the disbelievers confront great hindrance in controlling the people according to their will. They desire that all people should dwell under their command as the obedient. But the obedient of Allaah Almighty cannot be obedient of any other. Therefore the Idolaters of Makkah became enemies of the Muslims and they stopped them from visiting the Inviolable Place of Worship, whereas there should be no restriction for any worshiper to visit the Inviolable Place of Worship.

It is commanded: These disbeliever people who prevent the Muslims from visiting the Inviolable Place of Worship, they themselves deserve to taste a painful doom. Allaah Almighty has appointed the Inviolable Place of Worship for the entire mankind. The dwellers of that Holy Place and those who wish to come for worshiping from different parts of the world; are equal. In this connection, We shall punish as much severely to that person who will break this simple rule, treat the people with crookedness, and violate the rights of any other; that he will forget his all airs.

In such a manner, the Disbelievers tasted a painful doom even in the world due to their villainy during the Battle of Badr, and on the Day of Resurrection; they will reach as a whole the recompense for the evil they did.

24.  Wa  huduuu  ‘ilat-Tayyibi  minal-Qawli  wa  huduuu  ‘ilaa  Siraatil-Hamiid.

Commentary

‘Asaawira – (armlets), this word is plural of siwaar and its origin is suwar, which means “a wall for defense of the township” and “every that thing which surrounds”. Siwaar means “a thick bangle” which is called “a bracelet” (an ornament for the wrist).

Huduuu – (they are guided), it is past participle from the word “ha-da-ya”, which has passed earlier. Hidaayat means “guidance, righteousness, to show the path”.

‘Al-Hamiidu – (Laudable, Praiseworthy, Glorious), this is one Name from the Ninety-nine Names of the Epithets of Allaah Almighty, which is an adjective from the word Hamd. Hamd means “Praise of Allaah Almighty”.

After explaining about the punishment for the disbelievers, now it is being described about the reward for the Believers of Allaah Almighty. For their abiding, there will be shady and cool Gardens; in which the rivers of cold and sweat water will be flowing, instead of the doom of heat, burning and inflammation on the Day of Resurrection. Their raiment therein will be of soft silk and they will be made to wear armlets of gold and pearls. These are such people who found the Truth and Straight Path during their worldly life. They remained engaged in the Praise of Allaah Almighty, guided other people unto gentle speech; by which they also believed in Allaah Almighty and did good works during their life of this world. Its retribution will be that they will dwell with rest and peace in the Hereafter.

(Section 2)

Commentary

Maqaami-‘u – (a sort of iron club, mace, sledge-hammers), this word is plural from miqma-‘atun, which is name of an instrument and has been derived from qama-‘a. Qama-’a means “to exterminate, to beat soundly”.

Condition of those people will be the worst after death, who disbelieved in Allaah Almighty and dropped behind their desires. They consider that they are greatest in the world. If someone says to them: your Lord is the Greatest instead of you, Who created you, Who still has been guarding you and bringing you up. Then they turn up their nose; knit the eyebrows and say: We (Let us flee to Allaah) don’t admit such inharmonious matters.

On the Day of Resurrection, they will be dressed with the clothes of fire and the boiling fluid will be poured upon their heads, which will melt and cause to flow their internal and external body parts, skins and intestines; everything. Then at the same time, those entire parts will be reproduced, and again those will be melted and caused to flow.

It has been commanded in this verse: Their heads, bones and ribs etc. will be broken into pieces by beating soundly with rammers and iron clubs. Then those entire body parts will be corrected and the same act will be practiced. In this manner, their bodies will be burnt and cut, and their souls will bear the shocks of all of them continuously. And if they will wish to come out from the Hell being embarrassed, then they will be returned into the same by trailing again. And it will be said to them: Suffer from the doom of heat, burning and inflammation for ever (Allaah forbid).

Human being is very careless and ignorant, because such kind of clear and unhesitant narration does not exert influence upon them, whereas he knows that he can die any time, disasters have been making a circuit around him, and he does not know that when and where any mishap will become cause of his death.

19.  These twain (the believers and the disbelievers) are two opponents who contend concerning their Lord. Then as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads.

20.  Whereby that which is in their bellies; and their skins too, will be melted.

19.  Haazaani  khas-maanikh-tasamuu  fii  Rabbihim;  fallaziina  kafaruu  qutt-‘at  lahum  siyaabum-min-Naar.  Yusabbu  min-  fawqi  ru-‘uusihimul-hamiim.

20.  Yus-haru-  bihii  maa  fii  butuuni-him  wal-juluud.

Commentary

Qutt-‘at – (will be cut out), it is past participle from the word “taqtii’”, which has come out from qata-‘a. Qata-‘a means “to cut, to prune”. Taqtii’ means “to cut the cloth in such manner that by patching its pieces, a dress may be prepared”.

Yus-haru – (will be melted), this word is an aorist participle from sahr, which means “to melt, to dissolve”.

It was described previously that the human beings were divided among themselves in many different groups and every group of them gave a separate name to its people.

It has been commanded in this verse that actually there are only two groups which have been opposing each other face to face in the world. The people from one of those groups are who believe in their Lord i.e. Allaah Almighty. They are called Believers. And the people of other group, who do not believe in their Lord, are called Disbelievers.

In these verses, the End of these both opponents has been mentioned clearly. At first, it is commanded that after final judgment on the Day of Resurrection, for the Disbelievers, a kind of raiment will be prepared from the fire or cut pieces of the thing which catches the fire immediately, according to their full bodies. Moreover, boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads, which will melt their skins and after reaching their bellies, it will waste away their entire entrails etc. Which more clear words can be used than as mentioned above about the punishment? Our Lord! Save us from the Doom. Amen.

{As-Sajdah (Bow-down)}

Commentary

Holy Qur’an draws attention of the mankind again and again unto the matter that this world is subject to a determined Law. Anything, whether that is lifeless or have life, cannot do against this Law. Then it is commanded: Allaah Almighty has established this Law by His will and omnipotence on the account of Own Knowledge.

In this verse, it has been directed again that it is commanded: Is it not visible to mankind that the entire creatures which exist in the heavens and the earth, bow-down before Allaah Almighty? None of them violates from His commandment. Even many of the mankind too, who are very careful, bow-down before Him intentionally. But there are many people who disobey due to obstinacy only. So they deserve severe torment.

The mankind should understand it well that the person, whom Allaah Almighty scorns, there is none who may give him honor. And this truth should also be kept in mind that whatsoever Allaah Almighty desires, He does. There is no one who may have any power to change His Decision and disobey His any commandment. Therefore, the mankind should bow-down before Him even purposely. (This is the verse of bowing so as to touch the ground with the forehead in adoration).

Commentary

Majuusun – (worshipers of fire, a sect of the Magi), these are the people who believe in two Gods – Yazdan (the God who produces goodness), and Ahrman (the God who creates evil).

It is commanded: We have sent down the Holy Qur’an in the same form as you have been looking it. All useful matters for the mankind have been described in it very clearly, but in spite of it; only those people understand it to whom Allaah Almighty has bestowed sense; and who use their sense properly. If even then the people will not understand it and make separate groups in the Religion, then Allaah Almighty will question them on the Day of Resurrection. There are the Believers, the Jews, the Sabaeans, the Christians, the Magians and the idolaters in the world. Every one of them supports own Religion. After death it will be known that who was right and who was wrong. Faiths and deeds of every individual will be produced before all of them, so that they may know about that which they did during their worldly life, and where will they abide due to reprisal of their deeds.
