Caravan entered but the people were unaware

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim. 
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّاكَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةً فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَٰهُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (68

68.  And when they entered in the manner which their father had enjoined, it would have naught availed them as against Allah; it was but a need of Jacob’s soul which he thus satisfied. And lo! He was a lord of knowledge because We had taught him; but most of mankind know not. 68.  Wa  lammaa  dakhaluu  min  haysu  ‘amarahum  ‘abuuhum.  Maa  kaana  yugnii  ‘anhum-mi-nAllaahi  min-  shay-‘in  ‘illaa  haa-jatan  fii  nafsi  Ya’quuba  qazaahaa.  Wa  ‘innahuu  lazuu  ‘ilmil-limaa  ‘allam-Naahu  wa  laa-kinna  ‘aksa-ran-naasi  laa  ya’-lamuun.               

 

Commentary

 

The sons of Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) did not enter in the city from one gate, but they obeyed as their Father (peace be upon him) commanded them and entered from different gates. The people of the city did not know that their caravan had entered in the city. Then it is commanded: That happens what God Almighty approves.

 

They acted upon that which was taught to them by Jacob (peace be upon him). That is to say; in the world of causes, the human being should not give up planning and care, but along with it, he should not have full trust in the causes only, but see also unto Allah Almighty for help. It is in the practice of those chosen servants of God Almighty in the world whom He gives knowledge. But maximum people go astray by being entangled in superabundance and shortage. Some are those who rely upon causes only and they forget entirely the Creator of all things including them. But some are those who sit in a corner by giving up the causes and think that Allah Almighty will make their all works operative without practice. But the correct way is that which is in between these both doctrines.

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

وَقَالَ يَٰبَنِىَّ لَا تَدْخُلُوا۟ مِنۢ بَابٍ وَٰحِدٍ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ مِنْ أَبْوَٰبٍ مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍوَمَآ أُغْنِى عَنكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَعَلَيْهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ (67

67.  And he said: O my sons! Go not in by one gate, go in by different gates. I can naught avail you as against Allah. Lo! The decision rests with Allah only. In Him do I put my trust, and in Him let all the trusting put their trust. 67.  Wa  qaala  yaa-ba-niyya  laa  tad-khuluu  mim-  baabinw-waa-hidinw-wad-khuluu  min  ‘ab-waabim-muta-farriqah.  Wa  maaa  ‘ugnii  ‘ankum-mi-nAllaahi  min-  shay’.  ‘Inil-hukmu  ‘illaa  Lillaah.  ‘AlayHi  ta-wak-kalt.  Wa  ‘alayHi  fal-yata-wak-kalil-Muta-wakkiluun.              

 

Commentary

 

‘ugnii  ‘ankum – (I save you), it is a phraseology, explanation of which has passed in Surah ‘Aali ‘Imraan. Meaning of the word “’an” used after ‘agnaa’, will be “to save or to cause someone to reap advantage”.

 

Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) instructed to His sons for saving them from the evil eye of the people that they should not enter in the city all together from one gate, otherwise, lest the people see them with evil eye. They should go in by using different gates separately; one by one or two by two.

 

Then He (peace be upon him) commanded: It is an outward safety measure, otherwise It is Allah Almighty, before the commandment of Whom, there is none who may succeed. I have entrusted my entire matter to Him. And every individual should do so that wherever anyone becomes helpless, there, particularly, he should entrust his matter to Allah Almighty. Save Him, there is no one who may be trustworthy like Him. And in Him let the entire trusting people put their trust.

 

It has been more clarified from this narration that in the world of causes, every person must adopt the way of apparent management properly during common circumstances, but they should trust only in Allah Almighty, not in own arrangements.

I entrust this matter to Allah Almighty

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

  قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِىبِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌ (66

66.  He said: I will not send him with you till ye give me an undertaking in the name of Allah that ye will bring him back to me, unless ye are surrounded. So when they gave him their undertaking he said: Allah is the Warden over what we say. 66.  Qaala  lan  ’ur-silahuu  ma-‘akum  hattaa  tu’-tuuni  maw-siqam-mi-nAllaahi  la-ta’-tunna-nii  bihiii  ‘illaaa  ‘any-yuhaata  bikum.  Falammaaa  ‘aataw-hu  maw-siqa-hum  QaalAllaahu  ‘alaa  maa  naquulu  Wakiil.            

 

Commentary

 

Maw-siqa – (an undertaking), this word has been derived from wasuuq. Wasuuq means “reliance, assurance, confidence, faith”. Maw-siqa means “a promise, an undertaking, a treaty of alliance”.

 

Yuhaata – (you are surrounded), it has come out from the word ‘ahaatah, origin of which is huut. Huut means “circumference, surrounding, boundary, to lay siege (to)”.

 

Wakiil – (Warden, A Guard), it is an adjective from the word wakala. Wakala means “to take over”. Wakiilun means “having legal power, authorized, at full liberty”.

 

Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) said to his sons: Behold! I can send him with you with the only condition that you all should take an oath of Allah Almighty and promise strongly that you shall bring him back to me. If you all are surrounded badly by the enemies or entangled in any disaster and there is no way of escape, then it is another matter.

 

The sons gave their undertaking and promised strongly: It is our responsibility and duty to bring him back unto You. Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) said: Now, I entrust this matter to Allah Almighty and pray in His Court: My Lord! Make my sons able that they may prove themselves true in their undertaking.

 

First request of the sons was rejected by Jacob (peace be upon him) with the words: The Best Guarding is Allah Almighty, how would you guard him? Then He (peace be upon him) finished their undertaking with the words: I have entrusted this matter to Allah, The Most High. Known from it that this is the path for a Muslim to accomplish any work, “one should assure preparation of all apparent provisions, but he should not trust in them, moreover, he should trust only in Allah Almighty, ignoring those apparent equipages”.

We can guard our brother easily

  وَلَمَّا فَتَحُوا۟ مَتَٰعَهُمْ وَجَدُوا۟ بِضَٰعَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَبَانَا مَا نَبْغِى هَٰذِهِۦبِضَٰعَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ ذَٰلِكَ كَيْلٌ يَسِيرٌ (65

65.  And when they opened their belongings they discovered that their merchandise had been returned to them. They said: O our father! What (more) can we ask? Here is our merchandise returned to us. And we shall get provision for our folk and guard our brother, and we shall have the extra measure of a camel (load). This (that we bring now) is a light measure. 65.  Wa  lammaa  fatahuu  mataa-‘ahum  wajaduu  bizaa-‘atahum  ruddat  ‘ilayhim.  Qaaluu  yaaa-‘abaanaa  maa  nabgii.  Haa-zihii  bizaa-‘atunaa  ruddat  ‘ilaynaa.  Wa  namiiru  ‘ahlanaa  wa  nahfazu  ‘akhaa-naa  wa  naz-daadu  Kayla  ba-‘iir.  Zaalika  kayluny-yasiir.       

 

Commentary

 

Namiiru – (we shall get provision), origin of this word is mayr, which means “to bring the goods of food. Namiiru  ‘ahlanaa means “we shall get provision for our family”.

 

When they opened their luggage, they saw that the entire merchandise, as exchange of which, they went for getting grain, did exist in the belongings. They ran unto their father happily and said: Did you hear? The King has returned the amount which we paid there and he has given us the corn free of cost. Look! All that merchandise, which we carried for purchasing the grain, exists. Now, as soon as we reach there the grain would be ready for us. You should fulfill the terms imposed by the King now. Send Binyamin with us. Defending him is not too much difficult. We shall succeed in getting one extra measure of a camel load against his portion. It is a very easy plan of getting extra provision.

 

Which merchandise was returned by Joseph (peace be upon him), that was very helpful for His brothers to satisfy their Father, and He was desirous of the same.

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

قَالَ هَلْ ءَامَنُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا كَمَآ أَمِنتُكُمْعَلَىٰٓ أَخِيهِ مِن قَبْلُ فَٱللَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَٰفِظًا وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ (64

64.  He said: Can I entrust him to you save as I entrusted his brother to you aforetime? So Allah is Better at Guarding, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. 64.  Qaala  hal  ‘aa-manukum  ‘alayhi  ‘illaa  kamaaa  ‘amin-tukum  ‘alaaa  ‘akhiihi  min-  qabl.  Fallaahu  Khayrun  Haafizaa.  Wa  Huwa  ‘Arhamur-Raahimiin.    

 

Commentary

Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) commands: I have been suffering requital of sending his Brother {Joseph (peace be upon him)} with you on the promise of your guarding so far, and have seen well the result of having trust in you. Do you expect again from me now that I shall send the brother of Joseph (peace be upon him) also entrusting to your conversation? As you could not save his Brother, how would you save him? I erred aforetime that I trusted in you and your strong promise of His safety. Now I have known well my error that only Allah Almighty is Better at guarding. You cannot be a good guard. We should never forget Him. He is the Best of Protectors, Who is Aware of His servants’ condition. He knows my condition also. Who can be more Merciful than Him? Mercy is in His Hand; Who is Omnipotent to remove calamity. Other all merciful are humble. By observing that someone is in distress, they can show their sympathy only and feel in their hearts pity on his condition. Moreover, no one can remove hearty grief of any other. It is in the Omnipotence of Allah Almighty only that He can remove grief and sorrow from the hearts of all, provide ease and comfort against restlessness, and change the pain in pleasure. So, only His protection can be useful because He beholds all hidden and open enemies and can repulse them immediately. You yourselves are helpless, how can you help others?

Promise and menace by Joseph

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

فَلَمَّا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيهِمْ قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَبَانَا مُنِعَ مِنَّا ٱلْكَيْلُ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَآ أَخَانَا نَكْتَلْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ (63

 

63.  So when they went back to their father they said: O our father! The measure is denied us, so send with us our brother that we may obtain the measure, surely we will guard him well. 63.  Fa-lammaa  raja-‘uuu  ‘ilaaa  ‘abiihim  qaaluu  yaaa  ‘abaanaa  muni-‘a  minnal-kaylu  fa-‘arsil  ma-‘anaaa  ‘akhaa-naa  nak-tal  ‘innaa  lahuu  la-haafi-zuun.    

 

Commentary

 

Nak-tal – (we may obtain the measure), origin of this word is ‘ik-ti-yaal, which has been derived from the word kay-la. Kay-la means “to measure”. ‘Ik-ti-yaal means to obtain duly measured”.

 

Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) arranged in all respect that they should bring His brother Binyamin.

 

  • First of all; He promised that grain’s full measure of the portion of their brother will be provided.

 

  • Secondly, He (peace be upon him) menaced them also in these worlds: Don’t think of coming unto Me if you do not bring your brother.

 

  • Thirdly, He (peace be upon him) returned their merchandise silently and secretly.

 

The brothers could say only at the time of hearing the promise and menace from Joseph (peace be upon him): We shall try our best to prepare our father that He should send Binyamin with us.

 

It is commanded that as soon as they reached their father, they caused to hear him the first news: Our father! No grain will be given to us in future. The ruler of Egypt has said clearly: Bring your brother along with yourselves, whom you have left behind at home, when you come again next time, otherwise you will not be provided the corn. So, send our brother with us in our next round. We will guard him fully. The brothers were much influenced by the promise and menace of Joseph (peace be upon him), so they did not delay in presenting the matter before Jacob (peace be upon him). It is obvious that they would have told their father at first that the ruler of Egypt {Joseph (peace be upon him)} is a very good entertainer; who is very munificent and receives the guests warmly. Jacob (peace be upon him) would have seen, to and fro, the camels; loaded with saddlebags full of grain also. In short, they would have prepared well the situation for presenting their application, so that their father should recommend their request without hesitation. Along with it they said too: Now; we have not been carrying our brother for supports, therefore, there is no reason of negligence. During journey, we would have no work but “Safety” only.

وَقَالَ لِفِتْيَٰنِهِ ٱجْعَلُوا۟ بِضَٰعَتَهُمْ فِى رِحَالِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَآ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ (62

62.  He said unto his young men: Place their merchandise in their saddlebags, so that they may know it when they go back to their folk, perhaps they may come again. 62.  Wa  qaala  lifit-yaanihij-‘aluu  bi-zaa-‘atahum  fii  rihaa-lihim  la-‘allahum  ya’-rifuu-nahaaa  ‘izan-qalabuuu  ‘ilaaa  ‘ahlihim  la-‘allahum  yarji-‘uun.       

 

Commentary

Joseph (peace be upon him) was desirous that when those people (His brethren) come again for acquiring grain, they should make sure to bring their younger brother Binyamin with them. It was the reason that at first, He (peace be upon him) asked the detail of their address and then inquired: How many brothers have you? When they told about their younger brother, then at first; He (peace be upon him) laid stress on them that they should bring him also along with them when they come again, and He warned them too: If you did not bring your younger brother, nothing will be given to you in future.

 

In addition, He (peace be upon him) managed in such a way; by which; it was certain that they would bring Binyamin along with them. When His brothers were being ready to return, their luggage was being loaded on camels by the servants of Joseph (peace be upon him). Quietly, He (peace be upon him) arranged to place their merchandise secretly in their saddlebags, against which they had purchased the grain, so that after reaching home, when they open their baggage, they will recognize by finding their capital amount concealed in the purchased grain that: We have been provided the corn free of cost. It will persuade them good and their Father {Jacob – (peace be upon him)} will think also: there is no harm in sending Binyamin unto such liberal person: Certainly; He will pay attention and receive him with politeness. By all of this, nearly and surely they will come back along with their brother Binyamin.

 

Joseph (peace be upon him) had already thought: How should they all be peopled in Egypt with Him (peace be upon him)? He did not desire to confuse them due to shame; by disclosing Himself in their first meeting, but by the way, He wished to determine them a source of His meeting again with His Father (peace be upon them).

فَإِن لَّمْ تَأْتُونِى بِهِۦ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِندِى وَلَا تَقْرَبُونِ (60

  قَالُوا۟ سَنُرَٰوِدُعَنْهُ أَبَاهُ وَإِنَّا لَفَٰعِلُونَ (61

60.  And if ye bring him not unto me, then there shall be no measure for you with me, nor shall ye draw near.

 

61.  They said: We will try to win him from his father; that we will surely do.

60.  Fa-‘illam  ta’-tuunii  bihii  falaa  Kayla  lakum  ‘indii  wa  laa  taqra-buun.

 

61.  Qaaluu  sanu-raawidu  ‘anhu  ‘abaahu  wa  ‘innaa  lafaa-‘iluun.      

 

Commentary

 

Falaa  Kayla – (then no measure), here it aims “the grain”, which is given duly weighed by a measure. It means: You will not be provided any measure of grain from here.

 

Joseph (peace be upon him) was not still in favor of manifesting Himself. He (peace be upon him) is aware of all circumstances in fact, but He has been talking with His brothers as though, about them, He knows only that which they have been describing. Therefore, when they demanded the portion of corn for Binyamin, then He (peace be upon him) said to them: Bring Him with you next time when you come again. We shall treat him good also as we treated you.

 

It has been explained in this verse that Joseph (peace be upon him) warned them too: If you did not bring your brother then it will be considered that by telling a lie, you wished to get one extra camel loaded with corn. If you are true, then for proof; you should bring him, otherwise you are liars. In such condition, you are not allowed to draw near Me (peace be upon him), because I dislike the deceivers. If you will come back without him, your journey to Egypt will be useless, because I shall not give you even one seed of grain.

 

After hearing this from Joseph (peace be upon him), they would have been certainly confounded, because they were well aware about that which they committed in the matter of Joseph (peace be upon him). How would have their Father {Jacob – (peace be upon him)} trust in them for Binyamin? They had been entangled in a difficulty that if they did not bring Binyamin, it would be considered that they were telling a lie. And if they wished to bring him, how could they bring (Binyamin from father)?

 

At last they could say nothing but that: We shall flatter our father and as it might be possible, we shall excite him to send Binyamin with us.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

 وَجَآءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ (58

  وَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ قَالَ ٱئْتُونِى بِأَخٍلَّكُم مِّنْ أَبِيكُمْ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنِّىٓ أُوفِى ٱلْكَيْلَ وَأَنَا۠ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ (59

58.  And Joseph’s brethren came and presented themselves before him, then he recognized them but they remained unaware of him.

 

59.  And when he provided them with their provision he said: Bring unto me a brother of yours from your father. See ye not that I fill up the measure and I am the best of hosts?

58.  Wa  jaaa-‘a  ‘ikhwatun  Yuu-sufa  fadakhaluu  ‘alayhi  fa-‘arafahum  wa  hum  lahuu  mun-kiruun.

 

59.  Wa  lammaa  jahha-zahum-  bi-jahaa-zihim  qaala’-tuunii  bi-‘akhil-lakum-min  ‘abiikum.  ‘Alaa  tarawna  ‘anniii  ‘uufil-kayla  wa  ‘anaa  khay-rul-munzi-liin.      

 

Commentary

 

Joseph (peace be upon him) deposited grain in storehouses for seven years and then began to distribute with planning during the famine. This news reached very distant that, in Egypt, every necessitous is provided corn more than enough. When brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) heard this news, they came to Egypt for purchasing grain also.

 

When they arrived before Joseph (peace be upon him), He recognized them immediately, but the brothers could not know Him (peace be upon him). Then probably, Joseph (peace be upon him) would have asked them about their address. He paid them full attention and at the time of their departure for their home town, He (peace be upon him) gave them grain with generosity. Possibly, they would have said: We have one more brother, who has not come with us in this journey.

 

They would have requested for the grain of his (the brother left behind at home) portion after explaining about their entire circumstances. Then Joseph (peace be upon him) said: Bring unto me your left over brother when you come again next time. He will also be treated like you, when he will come. You have observed that I do not decrease the measure and I am the best of hosts. Actually, Joseph (peace be upon him) desired to call His real brother named Binyamin unto Himself.

God bestows His Mercy on whom He wills

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim. 
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

 وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَآءُ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَآءُ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ (56

 وَلَأَجْرُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌلِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ (57

56.  Thus gave We power to Joseph in the land. He was the owner of it, so that might settle therein where he wished. We bestow Our Mercy on whom We will and We lose not the reward of the good.

 

57.  And the reward of the Hereafter is better, for those who believe and ward off (evil).

56.  Wa  kazaalika  makkan-Naa  li-Yuusufa  fil-‘arz.  Yata-baw-wa-‘u  min-haa  haysu  yashaaa’.  Nusiibu  bi-Rah-mati-Naa  man-Nashaaa-‘u  wa  laa  Nuzii-‘u  ‘ajral-Muh-siniin.

 

57.  Wa  la-‘ajrul- ‘Aakhirati  khayrul-lillaziina  ‘aamanuu  wa  kaanuu  yattaquun.         

 

Commentary

 

We have seen that how Joseph (peace be upon him) accepted to be a manger of the country’s treasury. Later, with the process of time, all ministries of the government were given under His control. It has been commanded in this verse that after causing Him to pass through these entire circumstances, Allah Almighty desired to appoint Him ruler of Egypt and by means of Him, the Children of Israel should be brought there and inhabit them in Egypt. Therefore, these all happenings were for the same purpose.

 

So, it was the result that at that time, Joseph (peace be upon him) had full power over the kingdom of Egypt. The actual king was for the mere name of a king. Every matter was being commanded by Joseph (peace be upon him) only.

 

Allah Almighty commands: We exalt the person with Our Mercy whom We will. Verily, We bestow reward of good deeds to every righteous. The individual who passes his life according to Our prescribed Law, is certainly bestowed with full remuneration. He lives prosperous in the world without any confusion. And which dignity any individual deserves, acquires it. Besides this, he will also be given good reward after death on the Day of Resurrection, because the entire Believers and Abstemious people will find the fruit of their good deeds there.
