Chapter “Qasas”- (The Story) – 28

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 (I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

  فَخَرَجَ مِنْهَا خَآئِفًا يَتَرَقَّبُ قَالَ رَبِّ نَجِّنِى مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ 21  وَلَمَّا تَوَجَّهَ تِلْقَآءَ مَدْيَنَ قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَن يَهْدِيَنِى سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ 22  وَلَمَّا وَرَدَ مَآءَ مَدْيَنَ وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِ أُمَّةً مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْقُونَ وَوَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمُ ٱمْرَأَتَيْنِ تَذُودَانِ 23a

21.  So he escaped from thence, fearing, vigilant. He said: My Lord! Deliver me from the wrongdoing folk.   22.  And when he turned his face toward Midian, he said: Peradventure my Lord will guide me in the right road.   23a.  And when he arrived at the watering (place) in Midian, he found there a group of men watering (their flocks), and besides them he found two women who were keeping back (their flocks).

21.  Fakharaja  minhaa  khaaa-‘ifany-yataraqqab.  Qaala  Rabbi  najjinii  minal-qawmiz-zaalimiin.   (Section 2)   22.  Wa  lammaa  tawajjaha  tilqaaa-‘a  Madyana  qaala  ‘asaa  Rabbiii  ‘any-yahdiyanii  sa-waaa-‘assabiil.   23a.  Wa  lammaa  warada  maaa-‘a  Madyana  wajada  ‘alayhi  ‘ummatam-minan-naasi  yasquuna  wa  wajada  min-  duunihimum-ra-‘atayni  tazuudaan.

Commentary

 

Tazuudaani – (were keeping back, driving back), this is a tense of third person feminine plural from the word zaw-dun, which means “to prevent, to stop”. It aims that two women were standing aside driving back their flocks of goats.

 

Being afraid of arrest by the representatives of Pharaoh, Moses (peace be upon him) gets out of the City, looking hither and thither. He is not aware of the roads, so begins to walk on one road. This road leads to Midian. Journey of Midian takes eight to ten days from Egypt.

 

He (peace be upon him) did not know that where he was going. By the Command of Allaah Almighty, his face was toward Midian. He was saying during walking: I am fully hopeful that my Lord will guide me directly to such place where I shall be in comfort. He (peace be upon him) was going away that at last reached Midian. He (peace be upon him) saw that a crowd was pulling water from the well and watering their flocks of cattle. And two women were standing aside from them along with their flocks. It seemed that either they were unable to pull the bucket of water from the well or those people were preventing them from coming near the well.

 

(28:21) So he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, “My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people.” (28:22) And when he directed himself toward Madyan, he said, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way.” (28:23) And when he came to the well of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women driving back [their flocks].

Chapter “Qasas”- (The Story) – 28

إِن تُرِيدُ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَ جَبَّارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا تُرِيدُ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ 19b  وَجَآءَ رَجُلٌ مِّنْ أَقْصَا ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْعَىٰ قَالَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّ ٱلْمَلَأَ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ فَٱخْرُجْ إِنِّى لَكَ مِنَ ٱلنَّٰصِحِينَ 20

19b.  Thou wouldst be nothing but a tyrant in the land, thou wouldst not be of the reformers.   20.  And a man came from the uttermost part of the City, running. He said: O Moses! Lo! the chiefs take counsel against thee to slay thee; therefore escape. Lo! I am of those who give thee good advice.

19b.  ‘In  turiidu  ‘illaaa  ‘an-  takuuna  jabbaaran  fil-‘arzi  wa  maa  turiidu  ‘an-  takuuna  minal- Muslihiin.   20.  Wa  jaaa-‘a  rajulum-min  ‘aqsal-Madiinati  yas-‘aa.  Qaala  yaa-Musaaa  ‘innal-mala-‘a  ya’-tamiruuna  bika  liyaqtu-luuka  fakhruj  ‘innii  laka  minan-naasihiin.

Commentary

 

The Israeli said not only that which has been described in the previous lesson, but he said also: You killed a man yesterday and today you desire to kill me. He continued saying: You know use of your physical strength. Can you not make reconciliation softly between two men who are fighting? However, their dispute was settled by any means which has not been discussed.

 

But that, which was said by the Israeli concerning the incident of the day before, was disclosed and immediately the News was spread in the entire City that he was Moses (peace be upon him) who killed a Qabtii yesterday. It was revealed also in the Court of Pharaoh that Moses (peace be upon him) was the killer of the yesterday’s murder. Great courtiers began to think because it was an unusual matter that a man of ruler tribe was slaughtered so easily and carelessly. All of them cried out that Moses (peace be upon him) should be slain.

 

After hearing this conversation, a man came, running, from the farthest end of the City and said to Moses (peace be upon him): Courters have been finalizing their decision that you should be slaughtered, whereas you are sitting careless. Exit from this City quickly! I say for your welfare.

  فَأَصْبَحَ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ خَآئِفًا يَتَرَقَّبُ فَإِذَا ٱلَّذِى ٱسْتَنصَرَهُۥ بِٱلْأَمْسِ يَسْتَصْرِخُهُۥ قَالَ لَهُۥ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّكَ لَغَوِىٌّ مُّبِينٌ 18  فَلَمَّآ أَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يَبْطِشَ بِٱلَّذِى هُوَ عَدُوٌّ لَّهُمَا قَالَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ أَتُرِيدُ أَن تَقْتُلَنِى كَمَا قَتَلْتَ نَفْسًۢا بِٱلْأَمْسِ 19a

18.  So morning found him in the City, fearing, vigilant, when behold! He who had appealed to him the day before cried out to him for help. Moses said unto him: Lo! thou art indeed erring manifestly.   19a.  And when he would have fallen upon the man who was an enemy unto them both, he said: O Moses! Wouldst thou kill me as thou didst kill a person yesterday?

18.  Fa-‘asbaha  fil-Madiinati  khaaa-‘ifany-yataraqqabu  fa-‘izallazis-tan-sarahuu  bil-‘amsi  yastasrikhuh.  Qaala  lahuu  Muusaaa  ‘innaka  la-gawiyyum-mubiin.   19a.  Falammaaa  ‘an  ‘araada  ‘any-yabtisha  billazii  huwa  ‘aduwwul-lahumaa  qaala  yaa-Muusaaa  ‘aturiidu  ‘an  taqtulanii  kamaa  qatalta  nafsam-  bil-‘ams.

Commentary

 

Yastasrikhu – (cried out), this word has been derived from ‘istisraakh, origin of which is sarkhun. A word musrikhun has also come out from the same. Here it aims “to cry for help”.

 

Moses (peace be upon him) passed that day by any means. When he got up in the morning, he (peace be upon him) was confused and fearful that what would happen due to yesterday’s occurrence. He (peace be upon him) was going that suddenly he saw the one who sought his help yesterday, was crying out to him once again.

 

Moses (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, you are an evident, persistent deviator that you quarrel every day. But even then, after looking violence of the Qabtii, he (peace be upon him) raised his hand to prevent him. The Israeli considered that he (peace be upon him) would strike him. He spoke out: O Moses (peace be upon him)! Do you intend to kill me as you have killed a man yesterday? Still nobody was aware of yesterday’s occurrence that who was killer? The Israeli had seen the effect of the fist of Moses (peace be upon him). He was confused when he observed that he (peace be upon him) was coming toward him, because he (peace be upon him) was rebuking to him too.
