The Light of Allah on a Tree

Chapter Qasas”- (The Story) – 28

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

29.  Then, when Moses had fulfilled the term, and was travelling with his family, he saw a fire on the side of the (Mount) Toor and said unto his family: Stay ye (here); lo! I see in the distance a fire; peradventure I shall bring you tidings thence, or a brand from the fire that ye may warm yourself. 29.  Falammaa  qazaa  Muusal-‘ajala  wa  saara  bi-‘ahlihiii  ‘aanasa  min-  jaanibit-Tuuri  naaraa.  Qaala  li-‘ahlihim-kusuuu  ‘inniii  ‘aanastu  naaral-la-‘alliii  ‘aatiikum-minhaa  bi-khabarin  ‘aw  jazwatim-minan-naari  la-‘allakum  tastaluun.

Commentary

‘Aanasa and ‘aanastu – (he saw and I have seen), both words are in past tense from ‘iinaas, which has been derived from ‘a-na-sa.

Jazwatun – (a brand of fire, a piece of burning wood).

According to agreement, Moses (peace be upon him) completed his terms of service with Shueyb (peace be upon him). After that, he (peace be upon him) took leave along with his wife and moved for Egypt. Shueyb (peace be upon him) gave them some goats from his flock and bestowed a Staff to Moses (peace be upon him). During journey; the time of night came. Coldness and darkness encircled them. The Mount of Toor was before them. Moses (peace be upon him) saw some Light from afar toward the Mount. He said to his family: Stay here; I have perceived a fire in the direction of the Mount. I go there for getting information about this place, or at least; I shall bring any piece of burning wood, so that we may escape from this coldness and you may warm yourselves.

This illumination was the Light of Allaah Almighty, which was shining upon a Tree of the Mount, so that Moses (peace be upon him) should see it, reach there and the Prophet-hood may be bestowed to him (peace be upon him).

(28:29) And when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, “Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there [some] information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves.”

27.  He said: Lo! I fain would marry thee to one of these two daughters of mine on condition that thou hirest thyself to me for (the term of) eight years. Then if thou completest ten it will be of thine own accord, for I would not make it hard for thee. Allah willing, thou wilt find me of the righteous.

28.  He said: That (is settled) between thee and me. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there will be no injustice to me, and Allah is Surety over what we say.

(Section 3)

Commentary

Hijajin – (years),

‘Ashuqqa – (I would not put in difficulty), it aims “to put in burden, to rend”. The word mushaqqat is from the same origin, which means “labor, toil, pain etc.”

Wakiilun – (Surety, Witness), it is an Adjective. The word wakaalatun is from the same, which means –to take responsibility of other’s work.

As Prophet Shueyb (peace be upon him) was in search of any such person, Moses (peace be upon him) was also needy of any abode. Shueyb (peace be upon him) said: I can help you in this matter. I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on the condition that you have to serve me for eight years. However, if you complete ten years, it will be as a favor from you. I do not wish to put you in difficulty.

Moses (peace be upon him) agreed to this condition and said: This matter is established between both of us. Whichever of the two terms of service I complete – I would not be compelled. Allaah Almighty is Witness over what we say. I trust in Him.
