‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

62.  That was the Practice of Allah in the case of those who passed away of old; and thou wilt not find any change in the Practice of Allah.

63.  Men ask thee of the Hour. Say: The knowledge of it is with Allah only, What can convey (the knowledge) unto thee? It may be that the Hour is nigh.

62.  SunnatAllaahi  fillaziina  khalaw  min  qabl.  Wa  lan tajida  li-SunnaTillaahi  tabdiilaa.

(Part One-Fourth)

63.  Yas-‘alukan-naasu  ‘anis-Saa-‘ah. Qul  ‘innamaa  ‘ilmu-haa  ‘indAllaah.  Wa  maa  yadriika  la-‘allas-Saa-‘ata  rtakuunu  qariibaa.

Commentary

Yudnii – (informing), this word has come out from dar-yun, which means “to know”. The word – ‘idraa-‘un has been derived from the same, which means, “to inform, to show, to warn”. Maa  yadriika means “what may make you perceive?”

Previously it was commanded: If these immoral people did not refrain from their wicked deeds, did not give up vexing the women, and continued exciting the people for devilish matters and spreading fearful news in the Township, then We shall bestow you so much power that they would not be able to stay before you. And if even then they stayed in your neighborhood for some days, they would dwell in very distressed and disgraced condition. Then they will be arrested and slaughtered wherever they will be.

In this verse, it is commanded: This remained Our Established Way with those who passed on before that when refractory people cross the line and do not refrain from wickedness, then We support Our good people for the sake of spreading safety and peace in the world; and We ruin the stubborn people by means of them. You will not find any change in that Practice of Allaah Almighty which He has established. Wrongdoers are frightened from the Day of Judgment but being obstinate they ask: When will come your that Hour? You should say to them in serious mood without caring their buffoonery behavior: Knowledge of it is only with Allaah. It may be that the Hour is near. There is no any such source by which we may know its exact time.

61.  Mal-‘uuniina  ‘aynamaa  suqifuuu  ‘ukhizuu  wa  quttiluu  taqtiilaa.

Commentary

Lanug-riyanna – (We will incite), this word is from ‘igraa-‘un, which means “to appoint, to stir up, to quicken, to elevate”.

Yujaawiruuna – (will live in neighborhood),

It was commanded earlier: The caution is in it that when Muslim noble women go abroad, they should cover their heads, faces, bodies and garments with cloth sheets. One eye can be kept opened according to requirement. If even then the immoral persons do not refrain then it is sure that either their belief is weak or they are only so-called Muslims, or there is a disease in their hearts.

Say to such kind of people and those who spread shocking news and indecent matters in the Township for confusing the people or spoiling their moralities: We shall appoint you O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) for punishing them and you will make them straight by beating or drive them out from the Township.

Moreover, if even then they dwelt, their stay would be for a little while. And during those a few days they will be accursed from all around. They will not be able to sing for joy freely and harass the gentle people. They will be searched, arrested and then punished immediately. Lawful punishment for them will be that they should be slain without delay. They should know it clearly that molesting and vexing the women is immorality of last limit whether those are chaste women or bond-maids.

Commentary

Yudniina – (bring down, draw close), this word has been derived from ‘idnaa-‘un, which means “to bring close”, the word dunuwwun is also from the same which means “to come close”. It aims “the women should draw their cloaks close on head and face for covering”.

Jalaabiibi – (cloaks, outer garments), this word is plural from jalbaab, which is a sheet of cloth used as outer garment, so that dress and body (both) may be concealed.

Muslim women, even the wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) too had to go out from their houses at the time of necessity. Unbelievers and immoral men used to lie in wait for them at such occasions and they used to vex the women. When they were rebuked, they used to say: We considered that they would be bond-maids or slave-girls.

As a remedy of their such pretence, it was commanded: It is necessary for your wives, daughters and common Muslim women that they should bring down the part of their outer garments (cloaks) over their faces and heads for distinction, so that it should be made easy to understand that who are Muslim women and who are bond-maids or slave-girls. And the immoral persons may not have any chance to say that they could not understand that who was a noble woman.

Therefore, you should be careful and draw your cloaks close round yourselves when you go abroad, so that the Muslim women and the bond-maids may be distinguished. So the women began to act upon this advice and they began to cover their entire faces save one eye.

Commentary

In the previous verse, it was commanded that the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) should neither be harmed and nor caused trouble. Moreover, the Muslims were prevented from committing such works by which there was a fear that certainly he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) will feel grief and suffer trouble. In this verse, those people have been frightened generally who give pain and annoy others. Their punishment has also been described.

It is commanded: Allaah Almighty has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment who do not obey the Commandments of Holy Qur’an, abuse Allaah Almighty, afflict the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and do not revere him.

Like this, those who harm innocent believing men and believing women by calumniating other than what they have earned and put them in trouble, they told a lie and committed a crime of false accusation. Burden of these both sins is on their necks, worldly punishment for which has been prescribed. And a way for its prevention has been determined.

Commentary

Previously it was commanded that you should revere and honor the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Its way was described that you should bear in mind that he should never be grieved or harmed by your any act. The same matter has been explained in this verse that: The Muslims should ask Allaah Almighty to confer blessing upon him and ask Allaah Almighty to grant him peace. By this; his love will increase in their hearts and they will follow Allaah Almighty and His angels (peace be upon them) by this act because Allaah Almighty Himself confers blessing upon the Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), and His angels (peace be upon them) too pray before Him to do so.

It is commanded: Allaah Almighty keeps His Sight of Kindness upon the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), mentions his excellences in Holy Qur’an, proclaims about his magnificence and dignity, and His angels ask Allaah Almighty mercy for him constantly. O people who believe! You also should join in his reverence and respect according to your capacity. At first, you should obey his all sayings and follow his entire deeds. After that, you should send blessing on him and salute him with a worthy salutation.

The Companions (May Allaah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): We have learnt the way of saluting (sending Salaam upon) you (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) from the prayer that when we sit for reciting “’Attahiyaat”, in it we say “’As-Salaamu ‘alayka ‘ayyu-han-Nabiyyu wa RahmaTullaahi wa BarakaatuHuu. Describe us now the way of sending Blessing (Salaat) too. The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) taught them Duruudi Ibraahiimii, which is recited in the last position of sitting in prayer (Qa’-dah) after ’Attahiyaat:

“‘ALLAAHUMMA  SALLI  ‘ALAA  MUHAMMADINW  WA  ‘ALAA  ‘AALI MUHAMMADIN  KAMAA  SALLAYTA  ‘ALAA  ‘IBRAAHIMA  WA  ‘ALAA ‘AALI  ‘IBRAAHIMA  ‘INNAKA  HAMIIDUM- MAJIID”.

“‘ALLAAHUMMA  BAARIK  ‘ALAA  MUHAMMADINW  WA  ‘ALAA  ‘AALI MUHAMMADIN KAMAA  BAARAKTA  ‘ALAA  ‘IBRAAHIMA WA  ‘ALAA  ‘AALI  ‘IBRAAHIMA  ‘INNAKA  HAMIIDUM- MAJIID”.

O Allaah, let Your Blessings come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allaah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious”.

The famous companion of the Prophet (SallAllaahu alaihi wasallam), Hadrat Ka’ab bin Ujrah (radi Allaahu anhu), narrates that once it was enquired from Sayyiduna RasoolUllaah (SallAllaahu alaihi wasallam) as to how blessings should be sent to him. The Prophet (SallAllaahu alaihi wasallam) replied that the blessings be said in the manner (it has been mentioned) above, that is, Durood-e-Ibrahimi.

It also comes in understanding from the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) that when his name is called, we should say along with his name “SallAllaahu alaihi wasallam”. Briefly we should recite often “’As-Salaatu was-Salaamu ‘alaa RasuulAllaah”.

Commentary

It was commanded to the men in the previous verse that they should not come before the wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). By this, close relatives feared also.

In this verse, it has been cleared and described that coming of women before close relatives is not forbidden. In this connection, it has been explained in Suratun-Nuur and here again the same matter has been manifested, that is to say, the women can come before following close relatives. And the same commandment is also for the wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) – father, sons, brothers, sons of brothers, sons of sisters or Muslim women who come at homes for working, or own possessed bond-maids and female-slaves. Non-Muslim men, women or male servants are not included in it. The Muslim women should not come before them as it has been explained in Suratun-Nuur (Chapter “Light” – 24).

After that, it is commanded: This is only apparent precautionary measures to stop false thoughts”. The actual thing is fear of Allaah Almighty for correction of the heart. Therefore, you should abide by these commandments having fear of Allaah Almighty, because nothing is hidden from Him.

Commentary

The Muslims are being instructed: After having belief in Muhammad that he is a Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), there is no such opportunity of it that he is harmed, grieved or troubled by committing or saying any matter or thing against him. It is the work of those who have denied his Messenger-hood and begun to become obstinate in spite of meditating in clear signs and proofs produced by him.

Behold! It is also unlawful for you to wed wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) after his departure. Your such act is a great villainy in the Sight of Allaah Almighty.

It was indicated earlier by mentioning that wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) were “’Ummahaatul-Mu’miniin” (the Mothers of the Believers), but because this matter was most important, so now marriage with them has been forbidden very clearly.

It is commanded for emphasizing this matter: Indeed, that would be an enormity in the Sight of Allaah Almighty. You should never think or talk to marry them (May Allaah be pleased with them), because as Allaah Almighty knows all apparent things and matters, like this He is Aware too of your thoughts which are hidden in your minds. Therefore, you should keep your thoughts also pure and clean.

Commentary

It is commanded: The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) had to suffer due to your such affairs, but he cannot say due to modesty and regard that “you should now get out because your act of sitting here wastes his time”. Sustaining inconvenience by him and saying nothing to the person due to whom he suffers; is entirely highest grade of his civility and humanity. But Allaah Almighty cannot be shy of teaching you politeness and manners for the reason that the advice will displease you. He does not need to be shy or be silent in saying the truth and regarding desire of pleasing someone. Otherwise, how would you correct your habits and become a mankind?

Behold! You should not come fearlessly before female family members of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) to ask for something, but you should ask them from behind the curtain. Satan will not be able to get any opportunity of deceiving due to this care. It will be purer for your hearts and his (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) will not be discomforted. Commentary

‘Inaa – (moment, time for being prepared)

Way of meeting with one another has been caused to understand to the Muslims in this verse. Its origin should be on this matter that any other should not be harmed and nor any problem should be created for anyone else. It has been described in it that dwelling place of a mankind is like a place of retirement, in which he performs such works which should not be intervened by any other. If any such place does not remain for the mankind then he would have to face many troubles.

It is commanded: It is unlawful to enter any other’s house fearlessly without permission and any proper reason. You should not rush; particularly in the houses of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) as and when you desire, but you should enter then when you are permitted for a meal. Moreover, you should not reach there before time so that you may wait for the readiness of the meal. But when you are invited, then you should enter; and when you have eaten, then you should disperse without seeking to remain for conversation because you like to talk and do not like to get out. Usually the houses are small and it is not suitable for the guests to reach before time and begin talking after taking meal.

Commentary

The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) passed nearly twenty five years of his initial life in solitude. After that, he married with Khadija, the great (May Allaah be pleased with her), who had been widow twice. After her death, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) married Aisha the daughter of Abu Bakr Siddique (May Allaah be pleased with them). Then eight widow women (May Allaah be pleased with them) became Messenger’s wives. At the time of the departure of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), there were his nine wives – Aisha, Hafsa, Sawda, Ummi Salma, Zainab, Ummi Habiba, Jawairiya, Safia and Memona (May Allaah be pleased with them). They all gave up thinking about the prosperity of the world and liked the willingness of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). It was the reward for them in the world which has been described in the above mentioned verses.

It is commanded: You (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) are not allowed to take other women henceforth save those to whom We have made for you lawful, nor that you should change them for other wives, whether you feel them more beautiful and they please you.

Allaah Almighty knows that who abides by His Commandments and who does not care. Therefore, we should do every work bearing it in mind. The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was given authority to keep his wives equal in all matters or as he desired. And his wives had admitted clearly to obey his every command and they were willing to accept his every decision. The aim from this all was that he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) should not loiter in religious works due to being involved in domestic disputes. Even then, the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) took care of his wives’ rights equally, did not reap advantage from the privileges granted to him by Allaah Almighty and complied with entire works of preaching of the Religion. There was none who might perform like him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).
