Commentary

In fact, Prophets (peace be upon them) of Allaah Almighty complied with great necessary and useful works in the world. If they (Prophets) had not been appointed for guidance then some human beings would have been like wolves and beasts of prey. Some people used to quarrel with one another like cows, goats, strong fierce animals and wolves, and they used to press down the weak people. Prophets (peace be upon them) taught the mankind living mutually during their individual times. They said to the powerful people: Troubling the feeble is not good. You have not been given more physical strength for the purpose that you begin to strangle the weak people as and when you get any opportunity. But actual use of strength is that you should help the helpless. It is particular beauty of the mankind that he should have compassion with other mankind brothers and move ahead along with them.

Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) caused to understand the same to the real inhabitants (Qabti people) of Egypt that the Children of Israel were weaker than them, so they should not oppress them. It is against the human nature that strong people molest the weak and take work from them like animals. You are more transgressors because you desire to keep a group of people weaker and helpless, so that they must serve you.

It was reward of human service for Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) that they became famous as human well-wishers, and the wise people mention them with honor and send peace and compliment on them. Allaah Almighty commanded: Thus We reward the righteous. Along with it, they had wealth of belief. So they will be rewarded with great ranks in the next life. After them, there is mention of Prophet Elias (peace be upon him). Commentary

‘Al-mustabiinu – (clear, explicit, clarifying), its meanings are same as of the word “mubiin”.

For frightening the people from the nature of the consequence of evil deeds, Prophets (peace be upon them) were sent by Allaah Almighty from time to time, who conveyed His Messages to His slaves. Circumstances of Noah and Abraham from them (peace be upon them) have been described earlier. Now there is mention concerning two more Prophets who were from the descendants of Isaac, the second son of Abraham (peace be upon them).

It is commanded: These two Prophets {Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) came for causing to understand the rebellious Pharaoh of Egypt that he should refrain from his refractoriness. But he did not care and began to trouble the Children of Israel more than earlier. They both suffered from him very much, even that they and their people were confused so much. At last, Allaah Almighty helped them and they got victory on their enemy. Their folk were released from calamities.

It is commanded: We gave them the explicit Scripture; in which there was clear guidance toward the Straight Path. They both followed Our Instructions, but the people disobeyed Our Commandments and at last they were punished. They will deserve the torment of the Day of Resurrection too. (Let us flee to God).  (Section 3)

Commentary

Abraham (peace be upon him) did not care for the life of his son in the obedience of the Command of Allaah Almighty and got ready happily to sacrifice him. When he was sure that it was the interpretation of his dream that he should sacrifice his son with his own hands in the way of Allaah Almighty, then he did not delay in this matter even for a moment. Allaah Almighty rewards the doers of good. Accordingly, his (peace be upon him) generations take his name with reverence and respect. The Muslims sacrifice cattle every year in accordance with his tradition and exemplify him (peace be upon him) in every prayer when they send salutations upon Muhammad, the last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him).

It is commanded: Thus We reward the good-doers. We made them fortunate in the world and on the Day of Resurrection; they will be successful and satisfied, because they are from His believing slaves. After that, Allaah Almighty gave him (peace be upon him) good tidings of a son whose name would be Isaac (peace be upon him), and who would be a prophet from among the righteous. The race of both sons {Ishmael and Isaac (peace be upon them)} will spread very much.

Those Arabs are from the descendants of Ishmael (peace be upon him) among whom the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) was born. All Prophets (peace be upon them) of the Children of Israel were from the descendants of Isaac (peace be upon him). Then it is commanded: Their entire descendants are not equal. Some of them are righteous and some sinners have been doing wrong with themselves openly.

Commentary

Talla – (did put down, had flung down), origin of this word is tallun, which means “to let fall, to lay prostrate).

Jabiin – (forehead), tal-lahuu  lil-jabiini means “he laid him prostrate in such a way that Ishmael’s forehead was towards the earth, so that Abraham might not see his face”.

It is commanded: When father and son, both of them (Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon them) got ready for obedience of the Command of Allaah Almighty, then the son said to his father: Dear Father! Cause to lie me down in such a way at the time of sacrificing me that my face should be towards the earth, so that lest your love and mercy overcome upon you by looking my face, and you feel hesitation in sacrificing me, and we become late in performing the Command of Allaah Almighty.

In short, (Abraham put the knife on the neck of his son Ishmael (peace be upon them). It has not been mentioned in the verse that what both of them were feeling at that time, and how much kindness and blessing of Allaah Almighty was boiling up. Only it has been commanded: We called to Abraham (peace be upon him) and said: it is sufficient that you have shown your dream as true and obeyed Our Commandment. We shall reward you with good retribution due to your obedience and sincerity. We test the doers of good severely like this, so that they may be enriched with Our favors and blessings on their firmness.

It is commanded: There is no doubt in it that the test of Abraham (peace be upon him) was very hard, but he got success and We redeemed him with a precious and fleshy cattle which was a kind of sheep with a thick tail.

Commentary

It is commanded: We accepted prayer of Abraham (peace be upon him) and gave him good tidings that a boy would be born at his home who would be forbearing and gentle. He was his first son Ishmael (peace be upon them), because he was born due to Abraham’s prayer. After him, Isaac (peace be upon him) was born; for whom he did not pray. But wife of Abraham (peace be upon him) was astonished when she heard good tidings concerning the birth of a son during old age.

It is commanded: When Ishmael reached with Abraham (peace be upon them) the age of exertion, then on a day, Abraham (peace be upon him) caused to hear him his dream and said: O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. It is on the record that he (peace be upon him) saw the same in his dream for three continuous nights, then he was sure that it was a Commandment from Allaah Almighty. Then he described to his son and asked: What is your opinion in this matter? Ishmael (peace be upon him) replied at the spot: O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me steadfast when you will sacrifice me, if Allah wills. It is called obedience of Allaah Almighty which was shown by both – father and son (peace be upon them).

Commentary

Bunyaanan  – (a furnace, pyre), this word has been derived from binaa’, which means “a constructed place’.

Jahiim – (burning pile of the fire),

After hearing conversation of Abraham (peace be upon him), entire idolaters began to look blank. They did not have any answer of that clear truth which was spoken by him (peace be upon him). Being abashed; they thought to do wrong and began to say to one another mutually: He has crossed the line. You should give him such severe punishment that in future none may have courage to do so; if you have to save respect of your idols, and the people may understand it well that foes of idols are tormented like him (peace be upon him). Construct an enclosure, arrange for a blazing fire in it and throw him into it!

Allaah Almighty commands: They intended to misbehave with Abraham (peace be upon him), but We made them the most debased. The fire could not harm him and he (peace be upon him) came out from the fire safe and sound.

Abraham (peace be upon him) intended to leave his native land and said: I go to Allaah. He will guide me towards the Right Path. Therefore, he left his Township; and Allaah Almighty led him towards Syria. He inclined towards Allaah Almighty; leaving his home and native land, even everything, and prayed: My Lord, grant me a child from among the righteous who should glorify You always and become leader of righteous people.

Commentary

Yaziffuuna  – (hastening, rushing), origin of this word is zaffun, which means “to walk speedily”. When the people saw their idols broken, they were confused and rushed toward Abraham (peace be upon him).

Tanhituuna – (you carve, you shape by cutting),

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) intended to explain practically before the people of his folk that their idols were entirely helpless, so when they all went out of their Township for celebrating a Fair, then he turned and entered in their idol-temple. He saw that the idols were decorated in lines, many religious offerings and several kinds of food had been produced before them.

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) said to them (idols): Speak! Why do you not eat so much delicious foods which are kept before you? Why do you not answer and why do you not speak? Then he picked up a hammer, struck all of them and broke into pieces.

When the people returned from the Fair, they observed their idols broken and were confused. They considered that certainly it was the work of Abraham (peace be upon him). All of them hastened towards him. He (peace be upon him) said: Instead of asking me that who broke them, can you tell me that why do you adore the idols which you carve by your own hands? While you; including your entire useful things and instruments are created by Allaah Almighty, then why do you not worship only Him?

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) has been reproving to his father and the people of his folk: What has happened with you that you have made your adored to the idols of the stone, which have been fabricated by your own hands and you have formed them in accordance with your desire. Can these imaginary and self-made idols be able instead of Allaah Almighty that mankind become admirer of them? It is the utmost limit of stupidity. Can you tell that what did you consider the Lord of the entire Worlds? Do you not fear Him that He shall take severe revenge of this presumption from you and destroy you along with evil of your idols?

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) caused to understand them many days, but they did not hear attentively. Meanwhile, the days of their Fair Ceremony reached, which they all had to celebrate collectively; out of their Township. Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) took a glance at the stars before them and said: I feel that I have been going to be sick. They considered that he would have known about his future condition from the movements of the stars. When they got ready to attend the Fair ceremony, they compelled to bring Abraham (peace be upon him) along with themselves. When he refused, they all turned their backs on him, and went away for celebrating the Fair ceremony.

Commentary

It is commanded: Noah (peace be upon him) is one of Our believing servants. We saved him and his such children who were believers and good doers. For remaining all disobedient and stubborn people, We sent heavy water storm and drowned them.

After a long time, the people became refractory again. The Prophets (peace be upon them) came from time to time for causing to understand them. Even that the turn of Abraham (peace be upon him) came. He (peace be upon him) also was of the kind of Noah (peace be upon him), that is to say, follower of the same Path, because he too was a Messenger like him, and the Path of the entire Prophets (peace be upon them) from the first to the last; was the same. Therefore, they all are the persons of the same party.

Abraham (peace be upon him) used his God-given sense. He was born among the idolaters. Even then, after observing the Signs of Allaah Almighty, he knew Him, purified his heart from false faiths and ill-manners, and produced himself before his Lord. When he saw his father and the entire folk, adoring the idols, he checked them and said: Your way of practice is entirely wrong. Describe me that what and who these idols are, of whom you worship with reverence? These are idols of stones to which you adore, which have been made by your own hands. Bowing before them is just like staining own honor. Bowing heads before lifeless things, pebbles and stones is not suitable for the mankind. Dignity of the mankind is very greater than such things.

Commentary

Previously it was commanded that there were many people during the past times also who went astray like these people of Makkah and remained firm on customs and rites of their forefathers. We sent Our Prophets (peace be upon them) who warned them. Then those people who did not obey their sayings were ruined. And the people, who followed them, were saved.

Now some circumstances of the men of old and those who warned them, are being described so that it may be known that how the disobedient of the Messengers (peace be upon them) are punished and what reward of good works is given to the Prophets (peace be upon them). One of them was Noah (peace be upon him). He caused to understand the people of his folk: Mostly your works are bad. You should leave them and choose the Right Path! He (peace be upon him) invited them towards the Straight Path for nine hundred and fifty (950) years, but they did never care. Being helpless, he called out to Allaah Almighty: These people do not listen to me. He responded because He is the Best of Responders. He saved him (peace be upon him) and those who believed in him from the evil of wicked people and the great affliction. At last, descendants of Noah (peace be upon him) became heirs of the world. Indeed, Allaah Almighty thus rewards the people who do good. Good mention of Noah (peace be upon him) was left among later generations. Peace will be upon him in the both worlds.
