Commentary

Such people were present in Arab, who were called Augurs (Kaahin). The people used to think that demons and disciples of the Devil bring invisible News for them and tell them concealed matters in abbreviated sentences. Even they used to consider that teachers of the Poets were also Devils and Jinn. After hearing the Verses of Holy Qur’an, they said the same that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was also a Poet or an Augur, who was greater than other common Poets or Augurs (Let us flee to God). The same has been rejected in these verses.

It was commanded previously: A True Spirit brings down the Holy Qur’an. Then it was commanded: How can the devils (who are unclean spirits) bring down such a Sacred Word? Neither they have ability for this purpose and nor they can steal the invisible matters. They have been stopped from hearing real and true matters.

Commentary

Worldly desires and denying the Truth are reciprocal. When desire of the world takes one’s heart then certainly denial of the Truth will produce effect in the heart naturally. Now this denial will leave the heart then; when the individual will begin to die and he will be suffering from a great and heavy calamity. At that time; he will say: Would that I had been reprieved for some time and I had followed the Truth.

It is commanded: Do they wish that the doom should come immediately? Say to them! Consider it a blessing which you have been reprieved here and make some arrangements for your future betterment, otherwise if the doom came in your present condition of carelessness, then you will feel that length of the time of many years; which you passed in pleasures and enjoyment; was only for a few hours. So you should value this period of respite and should not hasten.

After that, it is commanded: Before destroying any township, We send Warners into it who advise them. We do never oppress any human being, but cause to understand concerning good and bad, by sending Our Messengers (peace be upon them).

Commentary

‘A’-jamiina – (the nations other than Arabs), this word is plural of ‘a’-jamii, which means “the person who does not know the Arabic language well, although he is from the Arabians. Contrary to it, ‘ajmii is that person who is inhabitant of any other place instead of Arab, whether he knows the Arabic language well”.

It was commanded earlier: Qur’an was revealed in Arabic language but the people did not accept it. In this verse, it is commanded: Suppose if We had revealed the Qur’an upon any such person who would not have known Arabic Language, and he had recited it before these people, even then they would not have believed in it. Negation has entered in their hearts. They have become blind due to selfishness. Till they are not over taken by any calamity or disaster, they will not admit. That ill will happen soon upon them, which will come suddenly and they will be careless at that time. Then they will say repenting: Would that we had been reprieved for some time and we would have shown our belief. But then they will not be relieved.

Commentary

Zubur – (the Scriptures), this word is plural of Zabuur, which means “A writing, Psalms of Prophet David (peace be upon him)”. Here it aims “Heavenly Scriptures which were revealed towards ancient Prophets (peace be upon them)”.

It was described in the beginning of this Chapter that These are Revelations of a Luminous Book (Qur’an), which have been sent by Allaah Almighty for guidance of the mankind. But if these people deny the Revelations then it is fault of their sense. They will have to suffer due to their denial. The same has been manifested by telling the stories of ancient people. After that, now it is being warned that this Qur’an is sent by the Lord of the Worlds, in Whom there is no doubt. It was brought by a faithful Angel named Gabriel (peace be upon him), and O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): We caused it to memorize you, because you have been appointed to frighten the mankind. You should inform them that the result of wrong deeds will be worse in favor of them. Mention of this last Book (Holy Qur’an) exists in those Books which were revealed prior to it (Torah, Psalms of David, the Gospel etc.) upon previous Messengers (peace be upon them). The scholars of the Children of Israel know it well. Is it not a token of this matter that This Book is True; in which there is no doubt?

Commentary

Zullata – (gloom, shadow), this word is a Noun from zillun, which means “A canopy, the fly of a tent etc.” Zullatun is the thing which spreads over head for safety from the sunlight like a large canopy and provides shade.

On a day, there was severe heat in the township of the folk of Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him). Being confused by the heat of the day, the people came out of their houses. There was no place of shelter for escaping from the heat of the sun. A piece of cloud appeared on the sky like a thatched roof. People of the township considered that possibly there might be coldness below the piece of the cloud. Entire people gathered below it. All at once the fire began to rain from it.

On the other side, an earthquake came, flash and terrible thundering was born, and the people of the township were ruined. Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) and his companions were saved. The name of that dreadful Day is “Yawmiz-Zullah” (the Day of Gloom).

Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) said only this after hearing the demand of the folk: The Lord of the Worlds is Aware of your evil deeds. I have caused to understand you and warned you that there would be bad result of opposing. If you do not believe; then your Lord will punish you.

After that the incident of the “Yawmiz-Zullah” (the Day of Gloom) happened. It is commanded: There is a Portent of Our Power in this accident. Even then most of the people do not believe. Anyhow, as your Lord is the Mighty, along with it He is the Merciful also.

Commentary

When an individual is physically healthy in all respect, has any of the enough strength, wealth or property, then mostly it becomes cause of misleading him from the right path, makes him disloyal and refractory. Attraction of the worldly evils overcast upon his sense and understanding as much that; he can see nothing besides them. If more powers from the above assemble in one mankind, then his rebellion increases also tow/threefold according to the powers he possesses (full bodily Health, enough strength, wealth or property). And if any individual possesses all such things; then certainly he will become a disciple of the Devil, (but the person to whom Allaah Almighty has shown the Straight Path and he is bestowed with the wealth of Belief, will never go astray). It was the reason of the destruction of many nations.

The folk of Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) possessed also all such things. They denied him (peace be upon him) and replied on his warning: It seems that you have been bewitched because you have been talking madly and unconsciously. You were an intelligent person like us, but what did happen with you that you became a Prophet and began to advise us? What can we do other than it that we should consider you a liar (Let us flee to Allaah)? We do not admit your claim of Messenger-hood.  Show us any such rare token which cannot be shown by any other; if you are true. Let any broken piece of heaven fall upon us; if you can show nothing else.

Most of the people say so carelessly to their adviser. They consider that neither will he be able to do so and nor shall we believe in him.

Commentary

Qistaasa – (the scale, balance), it aims that you should measure at full scale (balanced) of those things which are given and sold duly weighed.

Jibillatun – (generations, people), this word has been derived from jabalun, which means “to make, to create”. It is a Noun of expressing a number or multitude, which gives meaning of collection”.

The people of the tribe of Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) were greedy and avaricious. They used to deal the matters very selfishly. They used to take full price of their commodities from the purchaser but give less than the due and deprive him of his right. Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) caused to understand them: Why do you kill the justice? You should weigh with the true balance while you have taken full price of sold goods. Who did you teach giving the things less in weight which are necessities of the people but taking their price at full rate? It is the worst grade of meanness.

Second evil into them was that they were robbers also and snatch the property of others by beating, but they did not perceive that it was an evil. The people were greatly worried due to their wrong deeds. They were desirous of property and did not care whether someone dies or gets injury. Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) said to them: Behold! Refrain from such evil deeds and fear Allaah Almighty Who created you. He is the Creator of those too who were before you.

Commentary

‘As-haabul-‘Aykati – {The Dwellers in the wood (of Midian)}, these people were inhabitants of Midian; who used to adore ‘Aykah as most of the followers of Hindu religion adore the Tree of Pipal (The Fig Tree). ‘Aykah was a Tree of Forest near the Township of Midian. Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) belonged to the same folk. But since that the folk has been called as the adorers of a tree here, so Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) has not been called their brother, because as he (peace be upon him) was an individual of the folk of Midian, he was their brother, not as an adorer of the Tree.

Prophet Shu’eyb (peace be upon him) conveyed the same Message at first which all other Prophets (peace be upon them) conveyed, that is to say: Fear Allaah Almighty and believe that I am His Messenger. He has appointed me His Messenger for delivering His Message as it is, and I am quite trustworthy in this regard. I do not say to you to follow me that I am greedy of wealth or property and wish to get any remuneration from you. I shall be bestowed with reward of my work by the Lord of the Worlds.

I do not desire anything from you. This is said by all Prophets (peace be upon them) in advance; so that the people may not be deceived considering that they (peace be upon them) also are needy.

Commentary

When Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) observed that his folk will never be mended because they have been involved in a very shameful and odious habit, and as long they themselves are not extirpated, they will not stop committing this immodest act (carnal copulation against nature), he (peace be upon him) addressed the Lord of the Glory in prayer: Purify the world from their unchaste bodies, save me; my household and my companions, and carry all of us at any sacred place. Supplication of Lot (peace be upon him) was accepted. The Angels (peace be upon them) of Wrath arrived, who said to Lot (peace be upon him): Bring your people to that place about which you have been informed.

So it is commanded: We saved Lot (peace be upon him) and entire those who belonged to him. But an old woman from them remained behind who was slain. Then We put all remaining people of his folk to death with a worse manner, their townships were exterminated and turned over, and rained upon them a rain of stones. In the beginning they were frightened from the torment but they did not believe. At last this rain of stones was proved the worst for them.

There is a great Portent of Allaah’s wrath and mercy in this incident. Even then most of the people do not believe. Bear in mind that your Lord is the most Powerful and the most Merciful.

Commentary

After explaining about his duty and status before the people of his folk carefully, Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) said to them: What has happened with you that you come unto males for fulfilling your sensual pleasures, and set your wives aside? Allaah Almighty has established a natural way for it, that is to say, He has created women and made them your life partners, so that you should wed them and fulfill your natural sensual requirements lawfully. I have described you this matter in detail, otherwise your crime can be related in one sentence that you are breakers of Natural Law. You; not only; have crossed the line of humanity but you have put the beastliness to shame and become the devil entirely.

After hearing this, the people of the folk answered: Be quiet! We would drive you out from our township if you did not refrain from advising us. When Lot (peace be upon him) listened to this, he said: I hate your such conduct. How can I remain silent after looking such evil deeds?

Then Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) was disappointed from their side after hearing this and prayed in the Court of Allaah Almighty: My Lord! I cannot see their immodesty! Save me and my household from that what they commit.
