Commentary

Mishkaat – (niche, hollow in a wall for statue or lamp etc.)

Zujaajatu – (glass on the lamp to maximize the light, wax cylinder with wick used as a light),

Durriyyun (shining, like a pearl), this word is related to durrun, which means “a pearl”).

It was admonished to the human beings in the verses before this that they should keep their inward qualities and outward appearance separate from stenches; and clear from impure thoughts, and should not make the society disturbed and turbid by their words and works. After that, it was commanded: We have revealed very clear and shining verses in Holy Qur’an for the guidance of the mankind. There are much advice and admonition for all human beings in those verses. But only those people will reap advantage from them who ward off evil and abstain from indecency due to fear of Allaah Almighty.

It has been commanded in this verse: Know your Creator “Allaah Almighty”. If you wish to imagine concerning Him then you should consider it as He is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His Light has been spreading all around. The thing which is visible; is seen by the help of His Light only, otherwise nothing can be seen but darkness only. You can understand His Light from this similitude that there is niche wherein a lamp has been burning. The lamp has been covered in a glass. This lamp is being kindled by the oil of a blessed tree, named Olive. This oil does never finish and it is of such olive which does neither exist quite in the East and nor quite in the West. But it is at such place where benefit of both sides has been reaching it. It has been prospering morn and evening in open air and light. There is neither so much heat that it may be dry and nor there is so cold that it may fade.

Quran Chapter 24: 34 (Pt-18, Stg-4) (L-2226) درس قرآن

Instructions for keeping the society chaste -2

Chapter Nuur” – (Light) – 24

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

We should learn from that which was described in previous verses and which manners of mutual friendly intercourse have been explained by Holy Qur’an. The human beings have those entire powers, perceptions and passions, which exist in other beasts also. But the human beings have some extra powers, which guide them “How to take work from bestial powers, how to use perceptions properly and why it is necessary to control the passions”.

What are those powers? Those are called intellectual and cordial powers which although exist in other beasts too but not as much as in the human beings. Therefore, three powers have been working in human beings – bestial, cordial and mental. Most powerful powers in bestial powers are desires and passions. Among the mental powers, actual power is to draw the conclusions as correct from the things known, result of which is called science. When it reaches perfection, then it begins to get ready-made conclusions directly from Allaah Almighty and those things also become obvious from which those results are inferred. The sense of mankind begins to see all such things clearly.

Cordial powers are approbation and bringers to end powers. Those should follow such scientific correct conclusions which have been compiled by most wise mankind, that is to say, the last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him); disciplined by Allaah Almighty. Collection of those Results is Holy Qur’an.

Holy Qur’an says: The intention of the mankind should be so strong that passions and desires remain under his control. The desire, which perplexes more than all other desires, is sexual desire. Taking work from it like beasts is against the dignity of the mankind. Therefore we have been described that the correct way of fulfilling this desire is “Marriage” and abstaining from those things, by which there is a fear of growing this desire.

Therefore, it is commanded: Talks offensive to chastity should never be in Islamic Society. Punishment of adultery and accusing any other falsely is scourging with whips publicly. You should never calumniate any person by your tongue; otherwise the accuser will be punished properly. And if he proved his claim by producing four witnesses, then the accused will be punished according to the punishment of an adulterer. For prevention from such matters, it is commanded that man and woman should lower their gaze, should not talk the matters of indecency with one another. The women should not show their adornment to strangers. They should adopt modesty and shame.

Commentary

Instructions for keeping the society chaste and pure from indecency were given in the previous verses and proper limits of punishment were described. Punishment of those people who traduce the virtuous and believing women was also mentioned. If the husband accuses his wife, but does not bring four witnesses, then form of its decision has been explained. ‘Aayshah {Wife of our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and our Mother (may Allaah be pleased with her)} was adjudged as free from the sin and the accusers were rebuked. Precautionary measures against lewd thoughts were described for keeping the domestic affairs chaste. It was discussed that “How the women should live at home?” It was admonished clearly that you should marry those, as soon as possible, who are unmarried. Allaah Almighty commands that you should behave with your slaves and bond-women like common human beings and should not compel them to earn for increasing your wealth by unlawful means, because letting them to earn by fornication is a forbidden act.

After that, it is commanded: There is no difficulty in understanding those commandments which have been revealed in the verses of Holy Qur’an. If still any person does not act upon those instructions, then consequence in his favor will be worse. This matter has been manifested by causing to hear the circumstances of ancient people that they were punished due to turning away from the Commandments of Allaah Almighty and being entangled in evil deeds.

These entire matters have been explained very clearly in Holy Qur’an. This all is for betterment of the mankind and the aim is to save him from ruin and destruction. There are sufficient admonitions for human beings in these verses.

Commentary

Mankind has been entangling since always in the confusion of covetousness and he commits also very bad works in the greed of profits of the world. He thinks often that he should acquire abundant wealth in any way, by which he may get immediately every that thing which he desires and be addicted to pleasure. During those days, slaves and bond-women were considered in Arabian territory as mercantile property. Usually they were not taken as human beings. Their masters used to demand that they should earn money as they can (legally or illegally) and give it to their masters. They used to force their slave-girls to whoredom, earn money from the people in this way and provide them.

Islam directed: Your slaves and bond-girls are also mankind like you. You should not take work with force from them. If they seek a writing of emancipation, write it for them. Moreover powerful people should help them financially so that they may get independence from their masters after paying their price. The people have been instructed that they should not compel their slave-girls for fornication to earn money for them.

If they wish to pass a chaste and pure life, then it will be more oppression that they are compelled by beating that they should commit adultery, and from that unlawful earning you enjoy your life. It will be your sin if you will do so. Allaah Almighty will call you; not them to account. And He will forgive their sins by His mercy for which they were compelled.

Commentary

Li-yasta’-fif – {let them abstain (from sexual relations)}, it is a word of command for third person plural from ‘isti’-faaf, which has been derived from ‘iffatun. ‘Iffatun means “to abstain from the sin”. ‘Isti’-faaf means “to escape from the sin intentionally”.

Laa  yajiduuna  nikaahan – {those who find not (the means for) marriage, who are not able to marry}.

Kaatibuu – (write it for them, make a contract with them), this is a word of command from mukaatabatun, which has come out from kataba. Katabun means “to write, to record”. Mukaatabatun and kitaabun means “to cause to record a written bond”. According to Islamic theology, if any slave or bond woman desires to get an agreement written from his/her master that “if I earn with hard working and pay my price to my master then I will be released”, it will be called mukaatabah.

It was commanded earlier that if the Islamic society has been running on correct rules, then fear of poverty cannot prevent from marrying. In this verse, it is commanded: If tranquility of the society has been corrupted and the evil of poverty has spread publicly, then it can be that someone fears due to non availability of provision after marriage. In such condition that poor person should save himself from fornication and other related sins. Then, when Allaah Almighty makes him sufficient rich by His Grace, then he should get married.

After that, masters of slaves and bond-women are being instructed: If anyone from the slaves and bond-women desires to get freedom and wishes to bring this term in writing that “if I pay equal to my price to my master then I will be released”, then the masters should consider thoughtfully that “after getting freedom they will not become thieves, robbers and immoral persons etc.” then he should write an agreement for them”, because getting independence is the actual right of every individual.

Commentary

‘Ayaamaa – (solitary, unmarried), this word is plural of ‘ayyimun, which means – that man or woman who is unmarried or after marriage, he/she has become a widower/a widow. For both (masculine and feminine) the same one word has been used.

A way of keeping the society safe from immodesty and indecency has been described in this verse and it has been advised to act upon this commandment. It is commanded: Sexual desire is a natural thing. But the mankind is not free in fulfilling this desire like other animals. Due to having sound mind, they have to abide by a prescribed rule in this matter. They have to live altogether mutually and be saved from the matters of immodesty and indecency. Their works cannot be correct without it. Therefore they should build houses, dwell into them and arrange to educate their children correctly. Common principle for it is that when healthy children reach the age of marriage after proper training in Islamic Houses and Society then they should be married, so that they may bring their legitimate children into being and be helpful in correcting the state of civilization. Bachelor and virgin, widower and widow – all are equal in it. No one should think about wealth and property in the case of marrying, but should care concerning health and manners. None can remain poor in Islamic society. Mutual aid and cooperation with one another in good works are compulsory for this purpose. And Allaah Almighty bestows prosperity and hilarity to every individual in such society. And His Established Orders are the result of His correct knowledge.

Commentary

More instructions have been given to the women that they should not stamp their feet with pressure in order that chinking of the ornament is heard by the people and covered beauty is unveiled by its sound and the people roaming around, turn their attention to her. This is that pure and chaste life, unto which Holy Qur’an desires to direct us.

After that, it has been commanded to the Believers that many thoughts and doubts come in the mind of mankind. One should try that no chance of growing evil thoughts is provided to the brain. After caring so much, still there is no remedy without it that one should pay attention always unto Allaah Almighty.

Therefore, it is being commanded to the Believers: If you desire success in the Religion and the world, then you should give ear every time towards Allaah Almighty. These are the meanings of “Repentance” that one should slight from false thoughts and imaginations. If one has erred by chance in any matter, then he/she should repent without delay and address Allaah Almighty  for forgiveness of own sins.

There is no doubt in it that if the Commandments mentioned in Holy Qur’an are obeyed, then such society can be produced in the world, in which there would be no mutual quarrels, disputes, stupidity, blood-shed, lewdness or disturbance etc. The Muslims should try this wholeheartedly.

Commentary

‘Attaabi-‘iina – (male attendants, followers), this word is plural of taabi’. Here, the aim from the word taabi-‘iina is those poor people who follow the prosperous people only for arrangement of their food and drinkables.

‘Irbati – (want), here it aims “sexual desire”. The aim from Gayra  ‘ulil-‘irbati is “those who do not think concerning women but mind their own business”.

‘Awraati – (those parts of the body, which are concealable), this world is plural of ‘awrat, which means “secret matters of the women”.

Nisaaa’ – (here it aims “those chaste women who dwell close every time”).

Besides those close relatives, concerning whom, it was described in the previous verse, the women can reveal their adornment also before – chaste women who remain every time with them, their slaves, their male attendants who do not have sexual desire and the children who do not know nakedness of the women.

It is found here that revealing the things of own adornment before loose character women is unlawful. Concealing is not necessary before male attendants who mind their own business, who do not see with evil-sight or who do not have sexual desire. Coming before grown-up boys unhesitatingly is not right. They should not reveal their natural, bodily beauties and adornments before loose character and immodest women who wander out unhesitatingly. These are etiquettes of dwelling at home for women which are being taught to them. It is education of modesty and shame which Holy Qur’an teaches.

Commentary

The aim from Ziinat is natural beauty of women’s body or any part of their body and that beauty which is gotten by wearing ornaments and garments etc. In the beginning, believing men and women were instructed that they should lower their gaze. And it was commanded to them clearly that they should not open their body parts which are required to be kept covered. Moreover, the women were directed that except face, hands and feet, they should not expose their decoration and any part of their body or its adornment before the common people save those men who have been described in this verse. The women have to keep their faces, hands, feet and ornaments opened under the orders of necessity. The men should keep their eyes lower, and this commandment for women is in all conditions whether they are at home or outside the house.

It is commanded: It is compulsory for the women that they should keep their veils drawn over their bosoms. In addition, it is commanded concerning common body parts that they should not reveal their forms and adornments before any other, but their husbands, fathers, fathers-in-law, sons, brothers, step sons, brothers’ and sisters’ sons (nephews). Remember it that it is the commandment of that society, in which men and women (both) lower their gaze.

Commentary

The believing men were instructed in the previous verse (lesson) that they should accustom to lower their gaze and be modest so that no sin may occur by them. In this connection, it has been commanded in this verse: These both matters will lead them to chasteness and pureness. If they will not care, will not lower their gaze during lawful and unlawful circumstances and will do whatever they wish to do, then there is risk of being drenched in impurity of sins of life. Remember it! Allaah Almighty is well Aware of your entire deeds.

After that, it has been instructed to the believing women that they also should habituate themselves to lower their gaze and guard their hidden body parts. They should come to know also that showing outward adornment of their natural beauty, dress and ornaments are not lawful for them. However, it is of no consequence in keeping that part of the body opened, hiding of which is difficult, and that is usually kept opened due to any necessity or compulsion. It is the reason that believing men and women (both) have been instructed to lower their gaze, so that neither anybody may see those body parts and nor any interference may happen in worldly matters. In those things, face, hands and feet are included which are kept generally opened under the orders of necessity. Like this, their outer adorning – a ring worn on the finger and henna etc. are included.
