Commentary

Yahii-qu – (it encompasses), origin of this word is hayqun, which means “to surround, to enclose).

It was commanded previously that “for being greater than others” it has become habit of everyone from them and they do not miss any chance of destroying their opponents by deceiving and using tricks. They become foes of them immediately and try to defeat them in all matters who do not follow them.

It is commanded: The ignorant people are unaware that those who deceive others seriously, their tricks are returned back to them. That person is ruined consequently who troubles other people unjust. It is possible that he may reap some temporary advantage for a few days and is pleased in his heart by thinking that he has thrown his adversary on his back, but in fact he has been planting thorns in favor of himself. In future he will be afflicted very severely. Remember! The oppressor will be destroyed himself. And those who were oppressed will overcome upon him.

It is such natural law, from which most of the people are careless, but it carries on its work continually. It is called Metaphorical Law, for which this proverb is famous, “As you sow so you shall reap”. Success of oppressors is not real. At last either they are punished in this world; otherwise it is sure that they will be tormented in the Hereafter due to retaliation of their wrong deeds.

It is being explained before the Idolaters of Makkah: You have been sowing seed of own destruction by molesting the Muslims unreasonably. Did you not hear the circumstances of ancient people? Reflect into the history of the world! Who is he from them who passed away in the past, but was not punished due to his evil deeds? Have you also been looking the same way that you too should be treated as they were treated? Remember it that “Tit for tat”.

Commentary

Wa  makras-Sayyi’ – (And plotting of evil), ‘as-sayyi-‘u  is an adjective of makar, that is to say “bad tricks, evil ways”.

With effect from the beginning, the Arabians used to run away from obedience of the foreigners and were ready to persevere strongly their independence in their Country. When none of the foreigners attacked upon them, some reason of which was that their country was apart from other countries; and some reason was that all necessities of life were not available there in accordance with the requirement, then the Arabians began to fight one another mutually and seize others. In process of time, their disputes increased so much that they created their separate tribes and the overpowering upon one another became their habit. Every tribe was desirous that it should be more powerful than others. On top of the same it happened that some of them were prosperous and some were contented in poverty. By this, their mutual strangeness increased more than earlier and looting began regularly. No one individual or tribe used to fall short in seizing own foe. They used to lie in wait for their prey like wolves and whenever they used to find any chance, they used to miss not this opportunity for destroying it very badly. This ambition of becoming superior, practice of tricks and ambush for seizing their opponents bloomed.

When the greatest and the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) came to them, they adopted the same behavior with him also according to their habit; considering that he too was their rival. And they forgot their covenants, strong oaths and mutual agreements that – “they would show other nations that they were more obedient than them and best followers of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) who would come to them”. In addition, their bad habit of seizing the opponent appeared with more strength. And instead of being obedient and submissive, they became enemy of their Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him).

Commentary

The Jews and the Christians were foreigners who settled in Arab and who were called the People of the Scripture. The Arabians used to consider that the People of the Scripture were very learned and civilized. They used to hear the stories of ancient Prophets (peace be upon them) and were very impressive from their history. Generally they used to consider themselves inferior to the people of the Scripture and were desirous that “would that a Prophet had come to us and we would have shown great works performed under his commandment”. Whenever the Jews and the Christians used to abash them in these words, “neither you have any Messenger and nor any Scripture, so you are unwise people”, then their vein of indignation used to boil up.

They used to hear from some people also: Ancient people did neither value their Prophets (peace be upon them) and nor listened to them attentively, but they often troubled them.

The Arabians used to swear by Allaah, their strongest oaths: If a Messenger came to us, we would show ourselves more guided than any one of the previous nations and which are proud of their being the People of the Scripture, we shall follow that path towards which he will guide us, we shall show ourselves civilized and polite more than them.

Alas! No Prophet came among us so far who might teach us doing good works and frighten us from the consequence of wrong deeds. Our nice sense of honor does not permit us that we should obey the Prophets (peace be upon them) of other nations. Passion of self-respect did strongly exist into the Arabians. While they did not use to like obedience of others save themselves then how could they obey foreigners? Even they were fond of remaining superior to one another mutually. Their one tribe used to fight any other tribe to caution about their superiority and after overcoming it used to brag on its opposite.

Commentary

Previously it was commanded: The idolaters do not have any clear proof of ascribing plurality to Allaah Almighty. Neither they can show permission in any Heavenly Scripture which may support their such faith and nor they can argue in this matter. Associating any other god save Allaah Almighty and adoring him is only their self-fabricated invention and the only result of deceiving one another mutually constantly. Its foundation is on false thoughts which have taken place in their minds. And on their basis, every one of them informs others by his words and works that “whatsoever we have been doing; is correct”. If they use their sense properly and give up stubbornness, then establishment of the sky and the earth on one condition can cause to understand them that only Allaah Almighty is Who can hold and support them, in Whose Divine Power; there is none who may interfere.

It has been explained very clearly in this verse that there is only Allaah Almighty Who has set up the arrangement of the entire universe by His Perfect Power. All heavens have been settled at their proper places and the earth cannot change itself its fixed position. If He will not control them at their proper places, then the entire system will be disorganized. There is no one who may have power to speak before Him and move from own place without His permission. It is His forbearance and forgiveness that in spite of haughtiness and obstinacy of human beings, the heavens and the earth have been staying. Certainly He is ever Clement, Forgiving.

40b.  Or have We given them a Scripture so they act on Clear Proof therefrom? Nay, the evildoers promise one another only to deceive. 40b.  ‘Am  ‘aatayNaahum  Kitaaban  fahum  ‘alaa  Bayyinatim-minh.  Bal  ‘inyya-‘iduz-zaalimuuna  ba’-zuhum  ba’-zan  ‘illaa  guruuraa.

Commentary

Ya-‘idu – (they promise), this word has come out from wa’-dun, which means “to say good thing, to promise for giving any good thing”. From the same, another word is wa-‘iid also, which means “to threaten, to say that I shall harm you”. Wa’-dah is a promise for goodness, but wa-‘iid is used for “threat”. Origin of both words is the same.

It was commanded earlier: Ask from these idolaters! What have you seen in your gods that you adore them? Have your sense left working properly that you consider them powerful who are helpless and who are incapable?

In this verse, it is commanded: If not so then you should have such Scripture which would have been revealed by Us, and in which it should be mentioned very clearly that you should ask others for help instead of Us (Allaah Almighty). A mankind should either have reasonable proof of his acts or he should have Commandment of Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) and Heavenly Scripture. While there is neither any rational reason and nor any written Commandment concerning worship of any other instead of Allaah Almighty exists, then on which foundation have you established such oppressive custom; which you do not give up in spite of having clear instructions? Now it is clear that you have been committing this unsuitable act due to giving religious offerings to one another, in which you have your personal advantages too.

These oppressors say to one another: These idols and self-made gods will intercede for us before Allaah Almighty. Therefore, we should adore them.

It is a clear deceit, in which they themselves have been entangled and entrap others also.

Commentary

‘Ara-‘aytum – (Have you seen), this is a proverb in Arabic language used for drawing attention of someone. ‘Aruu is word of command which means “Show!”. It has been derived from ‘iraa-‘tun which has come out from ra’-yun. Ra’-yun means “to see”. ‘Iraa-‘tun means “to show”.

It is the demand of human nature that he should not consider any other greater than himself save Allaah Almighty, Who created him and bestowed astonishing apparent and hidden powers. If he bows before any other instead of Allaah Almighty; then he oppresses himself. The people who established correct concept of Allaah Almighty in their hearts, they can never bow before any other. But those who have faith in other gods save Him, they are being warned in this verse that they should not remain involved in such negligence, startle from dream of carelessness, know their real Worshipped and be grateful to Him always.

It is commanded: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him)! Ask from them! Have you ever thought about the condition of your self-made gods? Have anyone of them created the earth or its some things, or have they participated in creating the heavens? It is apparent from their condition that those are entirely helpless. Neither those can make anything and nor are able to cause to produce. Then why do these stupid people adore them? Most of them are those who neither are able to hear and see, and nor can they give answer. By their present condition, they have been saying that they are nothing. And those who can speak, they admit even by their tongues that they are helpless. Give up all of them and incline towards Allaah Almighty only!

Commentary

As soon as the mankind opens his eyes in the world, he falls so much into snare of worldly works that he becomes unable to think about something else. Nowadays this carelessness has been increased very much. Such manner of the society has been established that as soon as the human being is born, he thinks nothing but to earn money, collect the wealth and cross others in acquiring dignity as more as it may be possible. He does not give importance to any other thing save Material development. All people have made their separate groups for attaining their objects and named them “Nation”. Everyone has been achieving one’s own purpose by taking the name of his nation. Temporary success of this world has made him dull of understanding. Some such people deny Allaah Almighty and His established Religion openly. And they consider that thinking concerning the Lord and the Religion is a waste of time only. They give preference only to their wealth, their manpower strength and their sway. They curl their moustaches and are proud.

Some are such people who do not deny Allaah Almighty but consider that abiding by religious restrictions is useless. Their works also are the same as of the deniers without any difference between them.

Holy Qur’an describes strongly: Whether you become rich, acquire honor or be a king, but if you denied Allaah Almighty verbally or disobeyed Him practically or committed both, then you have been collecting the wrath of Allaah Almighty. Nothing will come into your hands save loss on the Day of Resurrection. Your wealth, dignity and your airs, everything will be useless for you and you will be entangled in such misfortune; deliverance from which will not be possible. It is the certain decision of Holy Qur’an which informs you about your End.

Commentary

Allaah Almighty commands: It will not be better for mankind till he does not know the entire epithets of his Lord perfectly. How much correct concept concerning Allaah Almighty will be in the mind of the mankind, so much ease and comfort will be granted to him in the Hereafter. And how much error will be in his concept so much he will suffer from troubles and afflictions. Remember it that the correct concept of the Creator is required to be established in this worldly life, otherwise after death every individual will come to know it certainly, but knowing it at that time will not be of use. And when it would be known; then desire of sending back again in the world would be fruitless. After knowing about correct concept of Allaah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection, there will be no other form save it that he should taste the consequence of his misunderstandings concerning the concept of Allaah Almighty which he erred during his worldly life.

Therefore, you should understand well in this life that Allaah Almighty is Aware of all secrets in the heavens and in the earth. Nothing is hidden from Him. Like this He knows well also those faiths and intentions which are hidden in mankind’s hearts. And He will treat every individual in accordance with everyone’s faiths and intentions.

Behold! Other people used to live here before you where you have been living. They have departed along with their deeds. Now you are in the world at their places. Open your eyes and be cautious. You would be punished severely if you denied Allaah Almighty. No one else will be tormented at your place.

Commentary

Yastarikhuuna – (they will cry out), this word has been derived from ‘istraaakh, which has come out from sarakha. Saraakh means “crying”.

The people, who disbelieved in Allaah Almighty, will be lying in the Hell. Being in trouble due to pain, they will cry out for help and say: Our Lord! Release us from the Hell and send back again in the world. We promise that we shall do always good works and shall never do wrong as we did in our first life. Now our works will be quite different from those which we committed earlier. We shall obey Your every Commandment and do the same which Your Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) has described. We shall run away from evils, do always righteousness and shall be present again in Your Court as the successful.

The answer of their crying out will be given to them in these words: We granted you very long life in the world, which was enough for thinking and understanding. You could become righteous if you wished. Moreover, We sent Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) to warn and frighten you from the consequence of your wicked deeds. Why did you neither use your sense properly and nor followed Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him)? Now taste the punishment of your arrogance and evil deeds. Wrongdoers like you will not find any helper at this place. Accordingly your expectation of help from any other is useless.

36.  And (as for) those who disbelieve, for them is Fire of the Hell; it taketh not complete effect upon them so that they can die, nor is its torment lightened for them. Thus We punish every ingrate. 36.  Wallaziina  kafaruu  lahum  Naaru  Jahannam.  Laa  yuqzaa  ‘alayhim  fayamuutuu  wa  laa  yukhaffafu  ‘anhum-min  ‘Azaabihaa.  Kazaalika  Najzii  kulla  kafuur.

Commentary

Laa  yuqzaa  ‘alayhim – {(Death) is not decreed for them}, the word yuqzaa has come out from Qazaa, which means “deciding, to issue order”. The aim from the word qazaa is “to deprive of life”, that is to say, they will never die in the Hell.

In the previous verse, the state of obedient people was described that there will be Gardens for their dwelling. And when they will feel ease and comfort in the Gardens, they will be grateful to Allaah Almighty because they were relieved from afflictions and toils of the world; and a luxurious life was bestowed to them. Concerning those, who disbelieved in Allaah Almighty and involved entirely in worldly affairs during their life of the world, has been mentioned in this verse.

It is commanded: The Fire of the Hell is ready for those who disbelieve in Allaah Almighty. They will be cast into it during their life after death on the Day of Resurrection and there they will never die, because by death one can be saved from torment, whereas Allaah Almighty does not desire to provide them some relief.

After that, it is commanded: Make the deniers hear! Every such person who will disbelieve in Allaah Almighty during worldly life and get ready to deny Him, He will punish them continually in such a way that they will dwell in the Fire of the Hell forever and never die. It is an established order which has already been decided by Allaah Almighty and caused you to hear.
