Bringing the infidels into Hell

Chapter “Saaaffaat” – (Those who set the Ranks) – 37

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

54.  He saith: Will ye look?

55.  Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of Hell.

56.  He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin-

57.  And had it not been for the Favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).

54.  Qaala  hal  ‘antum-muttali-‘uun.

55.  Fattala-‘a  fara-‘aahu  fii  sawaa-’il-Jahiim.

56.  Qaala  Tallaahi  ‘in  kitta  laturdiin.

57.  Wa  law-laa  Ni’-matu  Rabbii  lakuntu  minal-muhzariin.

Commentary

‘In – (verily, almost), this word is abbreviation of ‘inna here.

Laturdiini – (of course, you ruined me), actually this word is laturdiinii. La, which is in the beginning, that means “certainly, of course, positively”. The word turdii has come out from ‘iraadaa-‘un, its origin is radii which means “to fall down in a pit. ‘Irdaa-‘un is transitive from the same, which means “to throw someone in any pit, which aims “to ruin, to destroy”.

Then he will say to his companions in Paradise: We should have a look that where he is and exists in which condition. After that, he will look and find that his worldly comrade, who used to make him fool due to having belief in the Day of Resurrection, will be visible in the very middle of the Fire. At that time, he will perceive wholly that he has entirely been saved from a great danger. It will come out from his mouth without deeming: How much it is good for me that I have been saved from your misleading, otherwise I also would have been suffering like you. You tried your best to push me into the terrible pit.

If I had followed you; I too would have been burning in the Fire like you. I am very thankful to my Lord Who saved me from your deception. It is His bounty and great favor that I am safe, otherwise I also would have been seized like you, produced in His Court and had deserved the same punishment.

53.  ‘A-‘izaa  mitnaa  wa  kunnaa  turaabanw-wa  ‘izaaman  ‘a-‘innaa  lamadiinuun.

Commentary

Madiinuuna – (will be recompensed, will be called to account), this word is plural of madiinun which has been derived from daynun. Daynun means “to requite”.

Heavenly people will be sitting comfortably on coaches in the Garden, drinking cups of palatable wine and talking with one another happily. Meanwhile one of them will miss his one companion of the world and he will say to the people of his council: I remembered that I had a comrade in the world who used to say: You were an intelligent but have become such ignorant that you believe in the Day of Resurrection, consider that coming back to life again after death is true and we will indeed be recompensed. What has happened with your understanding? You don’t think that when a mankind has died, his body has been finished and mixed in the earth. Only some bones remained which also has been broken in small pieces and wasted, then will he be brought back to life? I don’t understand these matters of ignorance. I don’t know how you believe that it is the truth, and along with the belief in the life after death, you believe also that every sinner will be punished and thrown into the Fire of the Hell, but the person who believed and did good works; will enjoy and live in the mansions of the Gardens. In short, he used to make me fool and jest after observing my deeds as of the religious people.

49.  Ka-‘annahunna  bayzum-maknuun.

50.  Fa-‘aqbala  ba’-zuhum  ‘alaa  ba’-ziny-yatasaaa-‘aluun.

Commentary

Gawlun – (polluted, bad effect, headache), the meaning of this word is “to destroy any thing”. Here it aims “Destroying the senses”.

Yunzafuuna – (intoxicated, to feel giddy),

It is commanded: Which wine will be provided to the good-natured people in the Paradise; that will not have any such badness in it, which is seen in the liquors of this world. It will be that wine’s peculiarity that any drinker will neither feel any bad effect of it whether he drink as much as he can and nor will he feel giddy. Senses of the drinkers will work properly without stammering.

There are many depravities in the wine of this world as senselessness, being dull of understanding, stomach pain, headache, excessive urination, vomiting, body-pain and acting like mad people. There will be no such badness in the wine of Paradise. Due to its delicious taste, the drinkers will enjoy merriment and pleasure, ambition and delight only. With them there will be maidens of modest gaze with lustrous eyes. Their color will be like the eggs of ostrich. Usually their color is yellowish white which seems very beautiful. The people of Arab like this color very much. It is the reason that the women of the Paradise have been compared with the eggs of ostrich.

After that it is commanded: The people of the Paradise will converse paying attention to one another. Before this, conversation between the Hellish people was discussed.

Commentary

Ma-‘iin – (gushing, flowing, pure), this word is an Adjective from ma-‘a-na. Ma-‘an means “to flow, to gush”. It is known that flowing water is more pleasant and delicious than stopped water. Therefore, aim from the word ma-‘iin is the same (pleasant and delicious).

It is commanded: Opposite to them, there will be such people who are favorite and chosen servants of Allaah Almighty. Their circumstances will be quite different from them. Grace and mercy of Allaah Almighty will be upon them. Such kinds of provisions will be given to them, state of which is confirmed and known. These will be fruits of very nice kinds. They will be respected and honored. In the Gardens of Pleasure, grand thrones will be laid and they will be sitting before one another comfortably reclining with pillows. Chaste and clean servants will be circulating among them bearing cups of wine in their hands for producing before them. This wine will be of a strange kind. Its color will be transparent white and it will be taken from a flowing spring. For its drinkers; it will be very delicious in taste. These drinkers will be such people who passed their worldly lives in the obedience of Allaah Almighty, believed that His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) was true, and who had acted upon the Commandments of Holy Qur’an.

39.  Wa  maa  tujzawna  ‘illaa  maa  kuntum  ta’-maluun.

Commentary

Self greatness has taken place in the hearts of these people so much that they give no importance to any other, although others would be more intelligent than them. Therefore those, who were wise of them, believed that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) was true. And they gave full importance to him. But these proud people said continually: How can we give up such gods for a mad poet which were adored by our forefathers and the entire folk till today? (Let us flee to Allaah). They used to say that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) was a poet because his Word was very effective. And they used to say him insane because in accordance with their thought, mind of only that person can be correct who follows blindly their ancient customs and traditions. It is entirely self-conceitedness.

After that, it is commanded: Say to them! You are entirely at wrong. Your statement is false. In fact, that is quite right and true whatever Our Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) says. He does not make imaginary words like poets. Neither he is a poet and nor a mad, because he has chosen the same Path which was chosen by all previous Prophets (peace be upon them) who recited true revelations before the people sent down by Allaah Almighty. And he (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) confirms all of them. He is sympathetic and well-wisher of entire mankind and does not give pain to any other. You will be entangled in very painful Doom on a Day if you did not obey him. You will taste torment on the Day of Resurrection as retribution of denying him and your arrogance. And that will be recompense of your own deeds.

35.  ‘Innahum  kaanuuu  ‘izaa  qiila  lahum  “Laaa  ‘ilaaha  ‘illAllaahu”,  yastakbiruun.

Commentary

As an answer of the blame that “you misled us”, the strong people will say: Look within yourselves instead of reproving us. You also had sense. You had to think that why should you obey us instead of following the good people. That was correct according to our thought whatever we said to you to do. It was not visible to us at that time that the path, which we had chosen, was wrong. We considered that we were going right. Today we knew that we were going astray. We were astray, so we led you too astray. Today both of us have been entangled in the doom. And every individual will be punished or rewarded according to own deeds.

After that, it is commanded: Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals and the disobedient. Allaah Almighty save us. Can any affliction be greater than sorrowful disgrace and disheartening hopelessness which would be forever? But the disbelievers deserve the same punishment because when Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said to them that they should recite “Laaa  ‘ilaaha  ‘illAllaahu” (There is no god except Allaah), then their haughtiness did not let them say the same. They thought: How can it be that we obey such a man {Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him)} who does neither have wealth and nor power, whereas we are successors of such forefathers and people of dynasty who were very dignified, rich and magnificent?

Woe for them, they did not understand that the same thought is the root of destruction. Considering oneself greater than others and admitting that one’s own searched path is best, is very dangerous kind of ignorance.

Commentary

It is commanded: The strong people will give answer of the weak people’s reproof and say: You cannot accuse us. Believing or disbelieving was your personal responsibility. You yourselves were disbelievers. What did we do? We had not so much power that we could pull the belief from your hearts and throw it out or let not enter the belief in your hearts. We did not have control on your hearts so that we could turn them according to our will. You proved yourselves baseborn and rebellion that you followed our signals without using your sense and having not control on your lowly passions.

Not only we were present in the world, but the Warners and the Directors of good things did also exist. Why did you not obey them? Suppose! We were misleading you by force, then they also were inviting you towards the Right Path sincerely and with the passion of good-will. Then why did you not listen to them and followed us? Obviously you yourselves were evil-minded, transgressors and unjust. If you did not incline towards the badness yourselves, then you would have listened to the good people and turned away from the wrongdoers. What is your benefit in it that you have been charging us? Our Lord had decided for the good people and the sinners, and issued commandments of reward and punishment. Today all such promises shall be fulfilled and everyone from us will have to taste the torment against personal wicked and wrong deeds.

28.  Qaaluuu  ‘innakum  kuntum  ta’-tuunanaa  ‘anil-yamiin.

Commentary

Ta’-tuunanaa  ‘anil-yamiini – {You used to approach us from the right (by full force)}. Yamiin means “right side”, because right hand seems stronger than the left, so it is used for terrifying and getting confessed violently.

It is commanded: The Angels (peace be upon them) will be bidden to stop them for awhile, for asking a question from them, after commanding that they should be driven to the Path of the Hell. When they will stay then they will be asked: What happened with you today that you do not help one another? The Angels (peace be upon them) have been arresting you and everyone of you has been producing oneself for getting seized without hindrance. None of you comes forth for helping any other. You used to leap and jump in the world on the power of your supporters and get ready immediately for the help of one another. Why are you standing today silently bowing your heads? None of you has any courage of speaking even one word before the Angels (peace be upon them).

They will have no answer to this question and they will begin to reprove one another. Feeble people will say to those who were in power: We underwent punishment today due to you. You kept us under your control in the world. You compelled us to do wrong and prevented us from doing good works. Your existence in the world became reason of today’s calamity on us.

(Part One-Fourth)

Commentary

Then they will say: O woe to us! This is the same Day about which the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) had informed to us in the world. Alas! Today we have been looking clearly that he spoke the truth entirely.

As soon as the human beings will be brought back to life again after death, all such veils will be removed from in front of the human eyes which had covered their eyes during the worldly life. Their senses were suppressed below many sheaths, and by observing the environment; they could not find out that “the Day of Recompense is near to come. Entire covers and screens will disappear in the next life. And when they will see here and there, they will understand immediately that the Day of Separation has come”.

Then it will be commanded by Allaah Almighty: Yea! It is the same Day of Judgment to which you used to deny. Today you will be punished due to your wicked deeds or reward will be given to you due to your belief and good deeds. For this Day, We had sent Our Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) towards you for conveying Our Message and to warn you that if you did not do their bidding and followed not the Commandments mentioned in Our Scripture; then you will be tormented very severely. You had to believe in the Day of Resurrection during your worldly life, so that you might be saved Today from woe and bashfulness.

After that, the Angels (peace be upon them) will be commanded: Gather all wrongdoers, disobedient, disbelievers, their companions and their false gods, and guide them to the Path of Hellfire.

Commentary

It is commanded: When it is said to them: You will be brought back to life again after death and you will be asked about your deeds, then they say: What did you say? After death we shall become dust. Being spoiled, our body will be mixed up in the earth. Perhaps our bones will remain in existence for a few days. Our forefathers were expired long ago. Their bones would have been disappeared. Will our bodies and the bodies of our forefathers come into existence again after being dust? We are unable to understand it. How do you say such thing contrary to reason?

As answer to their question, it is commanded: Say to them: It certainly will happen because it has been decided by Allaah Almighty. Entire human beings will be reproduced again after death. They will be rendered contemptible in the next life as a punishment who do not believe today in the life after death.

Listen concerning it that how the people will be brought back to life! The Trumpet will be blown and its Sound will shake the entire mankind. This one Sound will be enough for bringing all of them to life again after death. They entire will stand up without any delay as soon as they will hear this Sound, whether they would be in any form or condition. Being astonished they will begin to see hither and thither that how this Sound was; which raised them up.
