98.  Lo! Ye (idolaters) and that which ye worship beside Allah will be fuel of Hell. Thereunto ye will come.

99. If these had been gods they would not have come thither. And all will abide therein for ever.

    Commentary

It has been commanded in this verse that there is only one form of escaping from self-reproach that you should give up worshiping others than Allaah Almighty without further delay and think that these idols are nothing opposite to Allaah Almighty. If you did not refrain from adoring them; then you will be thrown into the Hell. And these entire lifeless idols will also become fuel of the Hell, so that the condition of their helplessness and disgrace may be manifested upon you, and your regret and desire should increase more than earlier, although at that time screaming and crying by you will be useless. But you will cry in such grievous sound and due to pain of torment you will wail as much that no sound coming to ears will be heard. Then neither you will be delivered from that torment and nor your idols will be able to help you.

Both (worshipers and worshipped) will become fuel of the Fire, but for the worshipers; grief and suffering will be cause of trouble. And although the idols (worshiped) will not feel pain, but their disgrace will be a separate punishment of soul for their worshipers.

    Commentary

Gog and Magog have been stopped due to an obstacle, prepared under supervision of Alexander the great, who was known as “lord of the two horns”, i.e. east and west (Zulqarnain). When the Day of Resurrection will reach nigh, then these vicious people will spread in the whole world. It was mentioned earlier that the people who did wrong, were ruined due to their evil days, they will never be reproduced in this world.

In this verse, it is commanded: When you behold that the rebellious people have been spreading all over the world, then you should consider that the Day of Resurrection is near. The last Day is such terrible Hour that when the disbelievers will see It, they will forget to wink their eyes. Ruin and destruction will be visible everywhere. Then they will cry out senselessly: Now the evil is near to come upon us! Alas for us! We were ignorant from this side. Not only we were careless, but we falsified it intentionally, rejected the Sayings of the Prophets (peace be upon them) too and committed such works; due to which coming of destruction was necessary.

95.  Wa  haraamun  ‘alaa  qarya-tin  ‘ahlakNaahaaa  ‘annahum  laa  yarji-‘uun.

    Commentary

Kufraana – (rejection, refusal to accept or grant, let not reap advantage of own effort).

Haraamun – (a binding, obligatory, final decision).

In the previous lesson’s verse, it has been described that the people have broken their religion into fragments due to being involved in their selfishness, lust and ambition, though only one religion has been determined for the entire human beings. And all the Prophets and the Messengers (peace be upon them) were sent for explanation and enforcement of the religion in the world.

And while it has been manifested in its complete form by means of the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and the last Scripture Holy Qur’an, and no need has been remained to amend, correct or cancel any commandment mentioned in it for future, then lineage of Prophets and Messengers has been stopped. If now, the people will break the religion into fragments by opposing one another, then they will return unto Allaah Almighty along with all mankind and they will be responsible of their deeds.

Allaah Almighty commands in this verse that it is His Established Order for retaliating that the person who would have done any good work and is a Believer, his effort will not be useless. In the same manner, the person who will deserve punishment due to own evil deeds, he will never return unto good works by leaving evil works, and nor will he be returned to this world after death for correcting his deeds with effect from the beginning. This Rule of Reward and Punishment has been fixed for the entire human beings. For actual success, Belief along with good works is compulsory.

    Commentary

One grand Messenger from the Messengers was Jesus (peace be upon them). His mother Mary (peace be upon them) was a chaste woman from head to foot. Allaah Almighty breathed into her something of His Spirit and Jesus (peace be upon him) was born from her womb without father. Allaah Almighty made both of them {Mary and her son Jesus (peace be upon them)} a Token of His Omnipotence for the people of the entire world, so that they should know Him after looking a Wonder of His Omnipotence and believe in Him.

Allaah Almighty commanded to the Prophets (peace be upon them): All human beings have been set up upon the religion revealed by Us; according to your guidance. And they entire are in only one nation. And I am the Lord of all of you. Therefore, you all should worship Me.

But the people were entangled in worldly lust and ambition. So they broke their religion into fragments and made their separate religious groups. They chose their separate gods. Therefore they would have to be liable of it.

At last the entire people will return unto Us and then We shall judge their deeds carefully.

    Commentary

Once again; the circumstances of Prophet Zachariah (peace be upon him) are being reminded in this verse that he called his Lord and prayed: As I know that You are the Best Inheritor of every mankind and whatsoever he has; is of Yours only. But I wish that any such person should exist in my family, even after my death, who should praise You always. Therefore I request that a son may kindly be bestowed upon me and I may please be left not alone.

It is commanded: We accepted his prayer, cured the condition of his wife, so that she may bear a child for him, and gave him a son named John (peace be upon him). These all three people (peace be upon them) deserved Our Mercy, because they used to do good works without any delay. They were hopeful of Our Mercy and they used to fear Our torment. And they used to bow humbly before Us.

    Commentary

Prophet Jonah (peace be upon him) came out from the township and embarked on a boat to cross the river. The boat began to drown in the centre of the river. The people said: Any slave; deserted from his master; exists on the board of the boat. Drop him in the river then the boat will go forth! They cast lots, then the name of Jonah (peace be upon him) came out thrice. In the end’ he jumped into the river and a big fish swallowed him (peace be upon him). Allaah Almighty commanded to the fish: Keep him in your belly as a trust. He (peace be upon him) is not for your food. We have imprisoned him in your belly.

In that dark closet, Jonah (peace be upon him) cried out unto Allaah Almighty: You are free from all defects. I am guilty without any doubt that I fixed three days for coming of torment upon them without Your Commandment, and then I deserted from the township without Your Order.

Allaah Almighty commanded to the fish: Throw him (peace be upon him) out on the bank of the river!

It is on the record that Jonah (peace be upon him) remained four hours in the belly of the fish. Allaah Almighty commands: We heard his prayer and saved him from that narrow and dark place. We save likewise them from distresses who believe in Us.

    Commentary

Zal-kifl – (Dhu’l-Kifl, one who accepts responsibility), he is one of the Prophets (peace be upon them) from the Children of Israel. During early stage, he (peace be upon him) was a righteous person who took in charge that he will obey the Commandments of Allaah Almighty. On this he was appointed as a Prophet (peace be upon him).

‘As-Saalihiin – (Righteous people), this word is plural of Saalih, which has been derived from the word salaha. Salah and salaahiyyat means “harmony, concord of sounds, agreement, sanctity”, that is to say; their nature was ready every time to do good works.

Mugaaziban – (being enraged), it is the subject from the word mugaazabatun, which has come out from gazab. Gazab means “dissatisfaction, anger and fury etc.” Mugaazibun means “the person who proclaims of his displeasure on any other’s ill-mannered work, and is angry”.

It is commanded: Ishmael, Idris and Dhu’l-Kifl (peace be upon them) were also among Our righteous slaves. They endured troubles in Our obedience and had patience. We brought them in unto Our Mercy. These all were such people whose nature used to accept good things immediately.

After that, there is mention of Dhu’n-Nuun, which is a title of Prophet Jonah (peace be upon him). He was an obedient slave and worshipper of Allaah Almighty. He prevented the people of his folk from idol-worshipping but they did not admit. Therefore, he (peace be upon him) was displeased and went off by saying: “During next three days; you will be involved in difficulties”. He (peace be upon him) said this in anger. Then without waiting for the Command of Allaah Almighty, he departed from the township. It is commanded: he would have thought that he would go out of Our Control.

    Commentary

Prophets (peace be upon them) are practical example of life, foundation of which is “turning the attention entirely unto Allaah Almighty, being thankful to Him during prosperity, having patience at the time of adversity and supplicating in His Court for removing the troubles. One of those Prophets was Job (peace be upon them), who beheld both conditions. At first he was in satiated condition. Wealth, children and servants etc. every facility was given to him (peace be upon him). At that time he was thankful to Allaah Almighty and used to obey His all commandments.

Then he (peace be upon him) was examined by afflictions. He suffered from a painful disease and everything was snatched from him. But he showed a rare pattern of patience. After all, he called to his Lord and prayed for deliverance from the disease. Allaah Almighty accepted his supplication, cured him completely, returned him entire household goods, children, servants, wealth and property; which he had lost. And He bestowed him the like thereof in addition to that which had been lost, so that He may show Example of His Mercy and remind the people who worship Him that “We are Present every time to help them; whenever they draw their attention unto Us”.

81.  And unto Solomon (We subdued) the wind in its raging. It set by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And of everything We are Aware.

82.  And of the evil ones (subdued We unto him) some who dived (for pearls) for him and did other work, and We were Warders unto them-

81.  Wa  li-Sulaymaanar-riiha  ‘aasifatan  tajrii  bi-‘amrihiii  ‘ilal-‘arzillatii  baarakNaa  fii-haa.  Wa  kuNnaa  bi-kulli  shay-‘in  ‘aalimiin.

82.  Wa  minash-shayaatiini  many-yaguusuuna  lahuu  wa  ya’-maluuna  ‘amalan-  duuna  zaalik.  Wa  kunNaa  lahum  Haafiziin.

    Commentary

‘Aasifatan – (in its raging), it is the subject from the word ‘asfun, which means “raging of wind”. ‘Aasifatan means “a furious blow of wind”.

Yaguusuuna – (they used to dive), this word has come out from gawasa, which means “to plunge, to dive”. Yaguusuuna means “they used to dive”.

It is commanded that We had given the wind in the control of Solomon (peace be upon him) which used to blow in its raging. In Chapter 38 (Surah Saaad, Part – 23), it will come that “the wind used to blow slowly and softly”. By mixing up the both verses; it comes out that the wind could be customized by the command of Solomon (peace be upon him), that is to say, sometimes it used to blow in its raging but sometimes in slow and steady condition. It used to lift up and carry the throne of Solomon (peace be upon him) and bring it back to Syria, which was a blessed country.

Then it is commanded: We know very well the power of the wind and how can it be used. We had subdued some evil ones and souls also unto Solomon (peace be upon him). They used to dive in the sea by his command and bring out pearls and gems for him. In addition to this, they used to do other works also according to his (peace be upon him) Will. They were unable to spoil or destroy anything because they all were in Our Watch.

79b.  And We subdued the hills and the birds to hymn (His) praise along with David. And We were the Doers (thereof).

80.  And We taught him the art of making garments (of mail) to protect you against your attacks. Are ye then thankful?

80.  Wa  ‘allamNaahu  san-‘ata  labuusil-lakum  lituhsinakum-mim-  ba’-sikum.  Fahal  ‘antum  shaakiruun.

    Commentary

Labuusin – (garments), it is a thing of wearing; from the word labasa, which is an adjective. Lab-sun means “to wear”. Libaas and labuus have same meanings. Here it aims “Zirah (chain armor)”.

Tuhsinakum – (for your protection), origin of this word is ‘ihsaan, which has been derived from hisnun. Hisnun means “the means of safety, and a fort”. ‘Ihsaan means “to protect, to give shelter”.

David (peace be upon him) was a Prophet who was very melodious. The Scripture named “The Psalms” was revealed unto him, in which there were hymns of Allaah’s praise, honor and purity. When he (peace be upon him) used to recite those Psalms in the state of pleasure and love, then hearers of them used to be enraptured. Not only the human beings but the hills too used to begin singing of praise to Allaah Almighty after hearing the voice of David (peace be upon him). Flying birds used to stop and begin to sing His praise.

It is commanded: There is no wonder in it that only Allaah Almighty is; Who did all this, and nothing goes out of His control. Moreover, He taught the art of making garments of chain armor to David (peace be upon him) for protection of the bodies of the fighters and defenders during war. The iron used to become soft like wax when it used to come in the hands of David (peace be upon him) and he used to make a garment of iron by molding and casting it. Those garments were used to be worn when the opposite Armies would have been in the battlefield, so that the bodies of the fighters/defenders might be saved from attacks. If the chain armors had not been made in the world, then the people would have been injured seriously and covered with blood by very little, sharp-edged things. Therefore we should be thankful to Allaah Almighty because of this graciousness and creation of other useful things. Remember it that all advantageous things have been created by Him only.
