47.  And He it is Who maketh night a covering for you, and sleep repose, and maketh day a resurrection.

48.  And He it is Who sendeth the winds, as glad tidings heralding His Mercy, and We send down purifying water from the sky –

48.  Wa  Huwallaziii  ‘arsalar-Riyaaha  bushram-  bayna  ya-day  RahmatiH.  Wa  ‘anzalNaa  minas-samaaa-‘i  maaa-‘an  tahuuraa.

Commentary

Subaata – (repose, sleep, rest), it is a Noun from the word sabat, actual meaning of which is “to cut”. Subaat is the thing which separates the mankind from business and becomes cause of comfort.

Tahuura – (that which purifies from filth and nastiness), it is a tense of exaggeration from the word tahar, which means purity. From the same a word Taahir has come out which means “pure”. Tahuur is the thing which itself is pure as well as it purifies the other too. These both attributes exist in pure and clean water.

It is commanded: If you are desirous to know Allaah Almighty, you can know by the difference between Day and Night. The Night is like a covering, which hides the mankind from all around and covers his body like garments. The mankind gives up working, takes rest and then sleeps. When he sleeps then his entire distress and weariness gets away, his body parts feel comfort and he gains pleasure.

During day time; the human beings get up and jollity is seen everywhere. Moreover, behold a portent of the Omnipotence of Allaah Almighty! When it seems that the earth by dryness and the mankind by heat of the sun have been dying, then winds begin to blow, which is foresign of raining. Then it begins to rain by the Mercy of Allaah Almighty. Pure and clear water rains from the sky, which purifies by washing all kinds of filth and stench.

Commentary

It has been described earlier that the mankind cannot do his actual work which he should do and for which; more sense and understanding have been given to him, when he has been involved in his worldly desires. It is apparent that he is sharpest in understanding among the entire living beings. He discovers separate peculiarities of things and makes separate groups of existing things with regard to them, and finds out their rules and formulae. The first work which he should take from his wisdom is that he should know Allaah Almighty. It comes into his knowledge in the first view that the things of the world do not remain on one condition, those change their forms and their inclination is in this side that those should be born at first; then grow up to a limit and then begin to wither to such stage that those are ruined gradually. This common peculiarity is seen in everything.

It has been commanded in this verse that you will see clearly these revolutionary changes in the shades of the things also. The shade of anything is produced when the sun rises, then it begins to shrink and at the time of midday; it nearly disappears. But when the day begins to decline, the shade begins to increase and spread again. When it becomes very long, then the sun sets and the shade disappears at night. Reason of appearance of the shade, its increasing and decreasing is the Sun. The same manifests its conditions from beginning to end. At last when the sun sets, the shade disappears. You should conceive on the same that everything is produced, increased, decreased and at the end it disappears. Everything of the world passes by the same stages and this all is Manifestation of the Omnipotence of Allaah Almighty. If He willed everything would have been made still and on one state.

Commentary

Desires of mankind want that the human being should remain slave of them only and to which direction those indicate, he should go forth toward the same direction. What has he not done in the world under the slavery of these desires? He crushed the weak people under feet, tore the throat of unarmed people by his hands and rent the bellies of helpless people. They bowed some time before the stones, some time stood binding their hands before the fire and some time when they were excited, they made themselves great; by crossing the line of kingship they claimed that they were gods. The Prophets (peace be upon them) caused to understand them very much that they should use their sense. They are mankind so they should not do like the cattle. But they did not care.

Their circumstances have been described in this verse that O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): Behold for awhile that mischievous Infidel who does what he wishes, dances on indications of his desires, does not use his sense and kills the humanity. How can you be responsible of his guidance who does not listen to you and who does not care? You would have thought that eyes and ears of such people are safe and sound and it seems that they are intelligent. They would be looking, hearing and understanding the good matters, but in fact they are entirely like the cattle in the form of mankind, nay but even worse than animals. They are human beings but they are their own assassins.

Commentary

‘In – (certainly), this word is abbreviation of ‘inna, which actually is ‘innahuu, that is to say, “the reality is it that”.

It was found in the previous verses that the Infidels of Makkah had fallen into that negligence also; in which the human beings remained involved during every era. The mankind becomes mad in fulfilling his desires every time in the world. He wishes to do all those works himself by repelling other people; which he wants to do. When he gets power to keep others under his control and he becomes possessor of empire, wealth and property, then his nature is changed.

If any thing can hold back the mankind from the rebellion, that is Belief in Allaah Almighty, His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and the Day of Resurrection. If not all, then at least the Emperors should have Belief in These Three, otherwise hope of happiness is useless. It has been mentioned concerning the Idolaters of Makkah that when they used to see the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), they used to make a jest and say: Is this he whom Allaah has sent as His Messenger? It was good that we remained firm on our gods; otherwise he would have gotten us discharged from them by telling a lie regularly.

Then it is commanded: They have been overtaken in this insanity that they have been doing well, whereas they have gone far away from the right path. It will be clear to them after a few days that who went astray. When the torment will fall upon them suddenly then their eyes will be opened.

41a.  Wa  ‘izaa  ra-‘awka  ‘iny-yatta-khizuunaka  ‘illaa  huzu-waa.

Commentary

Huzu-wun – (to treat as a jest, to mock), origin of this word is ha-za-‘a. A word “’istah-zaa’” has been derived from the same which has passed in Suratul-Baqarah.

It is commanded: These people of Makkah who, O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), do not listen to you, but wish to keep themselves involved in their absurd works, they have passed by the township whereon was rained the fatal rain of stones. It aims the townships of the folk of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him). When the people of Makkah used to travel towards the Country of Syria, they used to pass by these townships. At that place, now there is a lake of stinking water instead of population. People of those townships were involved in evil deeds (act of sodomy – a carnal copulation against nature). Eventually, agony of Allaah Almighty came upon them. The townships were turned over and the rain of stones was rained upon them from above.

It is commanded: Is it not visible to them that those townships were ruined entirely? Nay, they see their condition with their eyes, but consider that they are safe in the world, and they do not believe in the Day of Resurrection. They deem that they will not be brought back to life again after death. They will be punished due to their wicked deeds. If they are saved in the world, no matter, they have to die any time, come back to life again and suffer from the torment against evil deeds. It is commanded: They have faith that they are safe so they deny the Judgment Day. It is the reason that they have been inebriated. Therefore, when they see you (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), they have to do nothing but to treat you only as a jest. Truly, it is useless to hope that they will be straightened who do not believe in the Day of Resurrection.

Commentary

‘Ar-Rassu – (it is a particular Well), rassun means “well (pit sunk for water)”.

‘As-haabar-Rassi – (the dwellers in Ar-Rass), these people used to dwell near a Well.

Tatbiir – (to break into pieces, to shatter), origin of this word is tabar, which means “to be broken into pieces”.

It is commanded: Like Pharaoh and his folk, We ruined the folk of Noah also, because they denied the Prophets (peace be upon them). When they somehow did not accept; then Allaah Almighty sent a vigorous storm, in which they were drowned and they were made a means of warning for other people. And Allaah Almighty has prepared a painful doom for the evildoers, that is to say, the people who do not perform their human duties. They will be entangled in this doom after death. Like this, Allaah Almighty destroyed the folks of ‘Aad, Thamuud, the dwellers in Ar-Rass, and many refractory people; who were the generations in between, due to their disobedience. Allaah Almighty caused to understand all people by means of the Messengers (peace be upon them) that ancient people were annihilated due to their disobedience. But when they denied also, they were ruined too.

36.  FaqulNaz-habaaa  ‘ilal-qawmil-laziina  kazzabuu  bi-‘AayaatiNaa.  Fadammar-Naahum  tad-miiraa.

Commentary

Tad-miiran – (to destroy, to annihilate), origin of this word is damara. Damaar means “destruction”. The word tadmiiran is past tense from DammarNaa, which means “to annihilate”.

It is commanded: Several human beings before these people rebelled. Satan deceived them and they forgot Allaah Almighty entirely, established their separate groups and who from them were powerful; they appointed themselves chieftains of those groups, began to press down the weak and subordinate people, and they began to take work from them like animals. From the same people, a group of Egyptians was established, chieftain of which was called Pharaoh. He was such a rebellious that he claimed of his godhead and used to get adored from the people of his folk. And he had oppressed the Children of Israel who had come from outside and settled in his country.

It is commanded: We appointed Moses as Our Messenger (peace be upon him), bestowed upon him Our Scripture, appointed his brother Aaron as a Prophet, his helper and follower and sent them (peace be upon them) unto Pharaoh and his folk. Their first duty was to make the tribe of Pharaoh to understand that they should give up insurrection and obey the Commandments of Allaah Almighty. But those people denied. At last We annihilated that folk entirely.

Commentary

Masalin – (an example), a similitude by which; goodness or badness of actual matter is intent. Here it aims “the matter by which Holy Qur’an is scorned.

Infidels of Makkah used to say such things concerning Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and Holy Qur’an, by which they could be scorned before the common people, that he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) (Let us flee to Allah) is from among those people who fulfill their requirements from others by causing to hear them fables, poetry, predictions and showing spells of magic and conjurations. They used to form an opinion concerning Holy Qur’an that hearsay matters; collected from hither and thither; have been gathered in it, which some people write and dictate for them and they recite the same before the people every time. Sometime they used to utter: What need was of Allaah Almighty in sending down any Scripture? If He had to send down any Scripture, He would have sent down a complete ready-made Book all at once. What it means that It has been being sent step by step in parts?

It is commanded: We give them answer of their useless talks by explaining the Truth in Holy Qur’an, which describes about the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and Holy Qur’an clearly. The people who have been talking useless they have lost their senses. On the Day of Resurrection, they will be brought towards the Hell by pulling them keeping their faces unto the ground. These people are the worst in plight because they have been entangled entirely in evils leaving the Right Path.

Commentary

When a mankind adopts any matter, he becomes more familiar of it day by day; even it becomes his such habit that he does not feel comfort without it. Would that he had reflected before adopting that matter, that whether it is better in favor of him or worse? Holy Qur’an is aware of mankind’s this nature, so it seems that It has been showing his favor everywhere. Its only aim is that the human beings should not become collectively habitual of any evil. In other words we can say that It desires to see the human customs and traditions established on useful matters only. It cannot bear that their foundation is established on such matters which consequently may be harmful for human beings in any case. Unfortunately in the Arabic society some such matters had been in force before Islam, which might be cause of ruin for mankind in future.

Holy Qur’an desired to revise them. Many people of Makkah were enraged and they employed their entire strength against the Holy Qur’an. From among other matters, one of them has been discussed in this verse that they say: Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) claims that he is a Messenger of Allaah Almighty and says that Holy Qur’an is a Scripture sent down by Him, then Why is the Qur’an not revealed unto him all at once? Why are Its verses revealed by degrees and step by step?

It is commanded: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): The verses are revealed in right order by degrees for the purpose that you may understand its meanings clearly and acquire strong belief, so that your heart may be stronger and you may act upon Our Commandments easily.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

The Messengers (peace be upon them) were sent along with heavenly Scriptures and Books for drawing attention of human beings toward the same complicated formation of the mankind, so that they should save the human beings from that destruction. The Last Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and the last Scripture which was given to him i.e. Holy Qur’an, both were sent for conveying the same Message clearly for always and they described: Nafs Ammaarah (ardent desire) pulls the mankind unto corporeal (bodily) desires. Beginning to fulfill these desires is called “the World”. Nafs Mutma-‘innah (desire to do good) wants that the mankind should pay attention towards the betterment of Nafs Naatiqah (The Rational Soul), by which she may get ease and comfort after death, that is to say, on the Day of Resurrection. It warns continuously to the Nafs Ammaarah that she should obey Nafs Mutma-‘innah (desire to do good) and dwell in the world according to her guidance, otherwise when the body will be ruined; that is to say, the death will come, then Nafs Naatiqah (The Rational Soul) will be entangled in great affliction and trouble.

In which matters there is betterment of Nafs Naatiqah (The Rational Soul), those have been explained in Holy Qur’an. Nafs Mutma-‘innah (desire to do good) wishes that Nafs Ammaarah (ardent desire) should follow the Commandments of Holy Qur’an, so that she may acquire the pleasure of the last Day. Nafs Lawwaamah (Irascibility) warns the Nafs Ammaarah (ardent desire) from time to time that it should comply with Nafs Mutma-‘innah (desire to do good) and save Nafs Naatiqah (The Rational Soul) from destruction. Nafs Lawwaamah (Irascibility) and Nafs Mutma-‘innah (desire to do good), both have been mentioned in Holy Qur’an, however Nafs Naatiqah (The Rational Soul) is called Nafs (the Soul) only.

It has been commanded in this verse: Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) complained in the Court of Allaah Almighty: The people do not understand the importance of Holy Qur’an, consider it a collection of ancient fables, talking nonsense, poetry and spells of magic etc. and they have given it up by uttering different bad names. It is the reason that they have been going towards ruin. If it were possible for me I had prevented them forcibly from their folly.

It is commanded to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) in the next verse: Don’t worry in this matter! It is Our Way of performing in the world that whenever any Prophet (peace be upon him) came, mischievous and evil doers became his foe. You should not care the opposition of these rebellious people. Guidance is in the Hand of Allaah Almighty and He is Sufficient for guiding. These people are not able to harm you. Allaah Almighty shall spread His Message by means of you in the entire world.
