(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

38.  And Pharaoh said: O chiefs! I know not that ye have a God other than me, so kindle for me (a fire), O Haamaan, to bake the mud; and set up for me a lofty tower in order that I may survey the God of Moses; and lo! I deem him of the liars.

39.  And he and his hosts were haughty in the land without right, and deemed that they would never be brought back to Us.

38.  Wa  qaala  Fir-‘awnu  yaaa-‘ayyuhal-mala-‘u  maa  ‘alimtu  lakum-min  ‘Ilaahin gayrii.  Fa-‘awqid  lii  yaa-Haamaanu  ‘alat-tiini  faj-‘allii  sarhalla-‘alliii  ‘attali-‘u  ‘ilaaa  ‘Ilaahi  Muusaa.  Wa  ‘innii  la-‘azunnuhuu  minal-  kaazibiin.

39.  Wastakbara  huwa  wa  junuuduhuu  fil-‘arzi  bi-gayril-haqqi  wa  zannuuu  ‘annahum  ‘ilayNaa  laa  yurja-‘uun.

Commentary

‘Awqid – {Ignite, kindle (a fire)}, it is a Word of Command from ‘iiqaad, which has been derived from waqad. It aims “Construct a furnace of bricks!”.

Pharaoh had been out of his wits. Pride of wealth and power had made him blind and deaf. He addressed to his Courtiers after hearing from Moses (peace be upon him) and said: I have not known you to have a God on the earth other than me. Perhaps, He may be in the sky. Therefore, O Haamaan (who was one of his chiefs)! Arrange to construct furnaces of bricks for building a Palace so high for me that I may see and peep the God of Moses (peace be upon him). Although I am sure that he (peace be upon him) is telling a lie, even then it is necessary to keep him quiet.

From it; his aim was “to mock”. It had been crazed in the heads of Pharaoh and his chiefs that there was none greater than them; not only on the earth but in the entire universe. They considered that Moses (peace be upon him) was a liar (God forbid), who used to say that they would have to return to Allaah Almighty, Who will take an account of their entire deeds. They deemed that these entire were only imaginary thoughts.

36.  But when Moses came unto them with Our Clear Tokens, they said: This is naught but invented magic. And we never heard of this among our fathers of old.

37.  And Moses said: My Lord is Best Aware of him who bringeth guidance from His Presence, and whose will be the sequel of the Home (of bliss). Lo! wrongdoers will not be successful.

Commentary

Muftaran – (invented, self-fabricated), it is a passive/past participle from the word ‘iftaraa’. It aims, “this all has been invented by him himself”.

‘Aaqibatud-Daar – (the Home of bliss).  ‘Aaqibatun means “the Last Day, consequence and result”. Daar means “place of living, abode, home”. It aims “at the End, there will be a good place for their living”.

Moses (peace be upon him) came to Pharaoh and said to him: I have brought a Message from Allaah Almighty for you. The Message is that “you should give up refractoriness and believe that He is your Lord, and you should not tyrannize the Children of Israel”. Pharaoh said: your claim that you are a Prophet; is your self-invented. Moses (peace be upon him) showed him miracles of Staff and a White Hand for his refutation. He said: this is a game of magic. For proving your invented Message, you have nothing to show except invented magic. We, even our forefathers, have never heard concerning Allaah, His Message and Miracles. This entire is quite a new thing.

Moses (peace be upon him) answered: Witness of my sayings is Allaah Almighty. He, My Lord, is more knowing (than we or you) of him who has come with guidance from Him and who will be successful in the Hereafter. Sequel of wrongdoers will not be good. They cannot prosper.
