Saying a reasonable word to the needy

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) – 17

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَإِمَّا تُعْرِضَنَّ عَنْهُمُ ٱبْتِغَآءَ رَحْمَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ تَرْجُوهَا فَقُل لَّهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّيْسُورًا 28

 وَلَا تَجْعَلْ يَدَكَ مَغْلُولَةً إِلَىٰعُنُقِكَ وَلَا تَبْسُطْهَا كُلَّ ٱلْبَسْطِ فَتَقْعُدَ مَلُومًا مَّحْسُورًا 29

 

28.  And if thou turn away from them, seeking mercy from thy Lord, for which thou hopest, then speak unto them a reasonable word.

 

29.  And let not thy hand be chained to thy neck nor open it with a complete opening, lest thou sit down rebuked, denuded.

28.  Wa  ‘immaa  tu’-rizanna  ‘anhumub-tigaaa-‘a  Rahma-tim-mir-Rabbika  tarjuuhaa  faqul-lahum  qawlam-maysuuraa.

 

29.  Wa  laa  taj-‘al  yadaka  mag-luulatan  ‘ilaa  ‘unuqika  wa  laa  tabsut-haa  kullal-basti  fataq-‘uda  maluumam-mahsuuraa.

 

Commentary

 

‘Immaa – (if), in these verses this word “’in” is a conditional letter, with which “maa” has been composed. “Maa” means “nothing”. “’in” means “if”.

 

Maysuuran – (reasonable, soft, facile), this word has been derived from yasara, which means “sweet speaking, convenience, easiness”.

 

Mahsuuran – (tired), it has come out from the word hasara, which means “to afflict, to wear”.

 

It is commanded that if nothing has been remained with a person for giving to the necessitous people; in spite of observing the temperateness, even then his heart should be liberal and he should not reply harshly to the expectant. He should desire with expectation that very soon, Allah Almighty will give him with kindness and then he will help the needy.

 

After that, it has been commanded that mankind should take care of moderation in all conditions. Neither he should stop his hand as much that the needy begin to feel that his hand has been chained to his neck, which does not come down for giving something to the necessitous, and nor he should give the people to show that he is very generous; because of which he himself may become needy of others. In both conditions he will be reproachable. In first condition, people will call him saying: A miser or niggard, and in the second condition, he will be called: Indiscreet or inconsiderate.
