Preliminary note on Surah Luqman

Chapter LUQNAAN”- (LUQMAN) – 31

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

With regard to arrangement, this is Thirty First Chapter of Holy Qur’an, which was revealed after middle times of stay at Makkah, save two verses which were revealed in Madinah. It contains Four Sections. Luqman name was respectable for the people of Arab because there were many famous stories of the person of this name. It was said that he was an Abyssinian slave who used to draw such results by using his God given intelligence; after observing the occurrences in the world, which may be useful in the life of the mankind, and he used to advise the people that they should act according to his sayings. After that, his sayings remained among the people of Arab like stories and tales. Then, these stories were named as Hikaayaat ‘Albaab “The Stories of Wisdom)” which are famous even today.

Holy Qur’an has saved those advices for always which were best and useful for the mankind and drew attention of the people of Arab that “it would not be useful to hear or causing to hear these advices only as stories. You should act upon them and correct your conduct and mutual behavior with one another”. There is no mention of Luqman in Torah, but Holy Qur’an is not specified for any particular country or nation. It instructs the mankind to admit every good thing, whether that comes from anywhere.

You should not read the matters of ancient nations only for amusement like exhilarating stories. Do not hear their circumstances considering that those are only means for passing spare time. But you should take it as a warning. Wise people of all times used to say that some works are useful and some are injurious to mankind. Summary of the same has been recorded in Holy Qur’an. Sayings of some people have been related as they said and circumstances of some people have been described; so that the people may draw results useful for themselves.

In the beginning of the Chapter, it has been commanded that you should recite and cause to hear the circumstances of ancient people for acquiring advice from them, correct your deeds, escape from those errors which they committed, and whatever they said good, those all are the same which have come in Holy Qur’an. The person, who will act upon them, will live in the world in good condition as well as even after death he will gain comfortable and pleasant life. It has been commanded: The first work is that you should know Allaah Almighty, renounce from infidelity and idolatry. After that, you should abstain from evil deeds due to fear of Allaah Almighty.

Abstract from Chapter Thirty

Chapter RUUM”- (The Romans) – 30

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Those people who have full trust in Allaah Almighty and have faith in His Promises with true hearts, surely they are successful. Its proof is those few people who used to bear great physical and spiritual afflictions from the hands of Infidels and Idolaters of Makkah. We seldom see such patience and firmness in the history of the world, but it happened only with those people; whose hearts had taken such deep concept of the Greatness and Glory, Mercy and Favor of Allaah Almighty that it could not be removed. Their faith and belief had become so much strong that there could not be seen any deficiency in any side. How can such belief be produced? Its only way is – listening to the verses of Holy Qur’an and meditating into them, observing the manners of Muhammad, the last Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and following them. The Muslims were beaten by the Infidels, caused to lie down in sunlight, their skin was burnt by hot stones, they kept them hungry, broke relationship from them, threw away alone and in addition they cursed, reproached and taunted them very much. In short they afflicted them so much that it cannot be explained.

But the slaves of Allaah Almighty endured every trouble without complaining. They did not leave the companionship of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). The attraction which united them with the Messenger, was that:

“The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was undergoing the same calamities himself along with them, and he also was in the same condition in which his companions were without showing artificiality. When he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) used to recite the verses of Holy Qur’an before the people, he himself used to be impressed and manifest his belief in such a way that their hearts used to tremble with fear, embodied picture of truth and honesty used to come before their eyes. They had such rare satisfaction which cannot be seen anywhere. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) did not have so much wealth on account of which he could make the people his companions; even he was passing his life in poverty. Whatsoever was given to him by the people; was spent at the spot for their welfare”.

By the fortune of the verses of Holy Qur’an and mediation of having full trust in the Promises of Allaah Almighty, we too recite and hear those verses nowadays, but save only honoring we do nothing. As we hear, those who make us to hear are also alike but what Allaah wills. Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and his Companions (May Allaah be pleased with them) were not like us. Every word of Holy Qur’an used to take their hearts as a letter of the alphabet is engraved upon any metal sheet. They used to understand their meanings very carefully. By this Chapter they learnt enduring in troubles, having trust in Allaah Almighty and being fearless from foes. At last the world saw that what they were and what they became.
