52.  For verily thou (Muhammad) canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call when they have turned to flee.

53.  Nor canst thou guide the blind out of their error. Thou canst make none to hear save those who believe in Our Revelations so that they surrender (unto Him).

Commentary

Such short method of acquiring pleasure and success has been described for intelligent people in the previous verses that they can never err. The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) used to recite the Commandments of Allaah Almighty before them, but he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) used to grieve due to observing not their effects on major portion of the population and carelessness of the people that what has happened with them who run away from their certain advantageous matters, and have been involved in entire injurious and mischievous habits.

In these verses, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is being consoled that those Commandments are quite right and correct which are being revealed unto you. You should recite them before the people constantly and present the way of acting upon them along with your Believers. The people who do neither hear you and nor observe your way of working, their hearts have become dead, ears have become deaf and eyes have become blind. If apparently they walk, hear and see then what. They do not know concerning the real spirit of life and its pleasure. They have become habituated of such works which seem good apparently, but in fact those are like a tent or other baggage sent on before destruction. There is no difference between them and the dead, the deaf and the blind, whose souls have been without sense or motion like the dead, whose ears do not hear the voice of the truth and whose eyes cannot see the right path. As you cannot make the dead hear your voice and call, like this, you cannot make them hear too. Only those people will hear you who believe that Our Revelations are true. Those are the people who embraced Islam and were called “Muslims”.

Commentary

Muslims are being caused to understand that they should not be confused from present accidental difficulties and poverty. As there is severity of heat before the rain of mercy and the people become hopeless from the coldness, like this these troubles are herald of prosperity.

It is commanded: The earth becomes dry and dead due to severity of heat. Spreading of dust is seen everywhere. It seems that veins of its entire life have withered. But those who keep the end in sight; know in their hearts that it will rain very soon and the dead earth will revive again, its surface will become fresh, green and luxuriant. Its blood of life will run in its veins. Mercy of Allaah Almighty will appear and the entire severity will get away.

Like this, your good days will return also, there will be pleasure and happiness, and your enemies will be punished. Where the Muslims would have to learn by observing spring after autumn that “good days will come soon”, there faithless people should conclude from it that like this, dead human beings will also be brought back to life again with the Mercy of Allaah Almighty. He is over all Competent. But alas! Human being is a servant of self who becomes happy when condition is good. But when any calamity falls upon him, he becomes ungrateful.

After that, it is commanded: If just now, We send such wind by which their crops are singed and turned yellow, then these people will become ingrate immediately, whereas the slaves should admit and obey the Command of their Master heartily, be hopeful of His mercy and fear His anger.
