Commentary

It is commanded that these people say: we shall believe in his (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) Messenger-hood then, when he will show us miracles according to our demand. Say to them: This Scripture, which he has been reciting and causing to hear before you; is this miracle not sufficient? Does it not strike you that those have been increasing day by day who believe in him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and such good things have been coming to their mind which they have forgotten since long? No doubt, the person who will believe in this Scripture with true heart, doors of mercy will be opened on him and he will learn useful matters constantly.

Moreover, say to them O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): My Believers have been increasing day by day notwithstanding you trouble them. And whosoever comes, believes in me. It is Evidence of Allaah Almighty in this matter that I am true. And there can be no greater Witness than Allaah Almighty, because He is Aware of the entire circumstances of the heavens and the earth. Whosoever will not believe in Allaah Almighty but believe in falsehood, shall be the loser.

50.  And they say: Why are not Portents sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: Portents are with Allah only, and I am but a plain Warner.

Commentary

It is commanded: Leave these redundant thoughts. Neither this Book, which he {Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} has been reciting before you, was dictated by someone and nor was written by any individual (Angel, mankind or Jinn etc.) You know him that neither he learnt reading and nor writing from any human being. If you say that it was got written from someone else, then you also should bring such kind of Book written by any other. As you are rich and can pay wages to the writer, while you did neither do so and nor can do, then why do you make nonsense? Listen! We tell you the Truth of this Scripture. Give up your obstinacy!

It is the peculiarity of this Scripture that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) heard it from an Angel (peace be upon him) sent by Us and he learnt it by heart. Similarly, it will remain chest to chest till the Day of Resurrection in the breasts of Scholars and Reciters of Holy Qur’an. It is another matter that afterwards it has been preserved also in written form. However in the beginning it was not written and nor its preservation depends on availability in written form.

Then it is commanded: these disbelievers say: Why does he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) not show us any such unusual thing (miracle) which we say to show? If he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) will show us a miracle in accordance with our demand, then we shall believe that he is a Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

Say to them: I have not come to show you miracles, but my duty is to warn and frighten you clearly from the consequences of your wrong deeds.
