40c.  and of them was he whom We drowned. And it was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves. 40c.  Wa  minhum-man  ‘agraq-Naa.  Wa  maa  kaanAllaahu  li-yazlimahum  wa  laakin  kaanuu  ‘anfu-sahum  yazlimuun.

Commentary

It is commanded: We destroyed them by Our variegated torment who disobeyed Our Commandments because they were refractory people. Nature of punishment on some of them has been described previously.

Here it is commanded: Some of them died by drowning in the water as – Pharaoh, Haamaan and the folk of Noah (peace be upon him). In this verse, it has been declared that Allaah Almighty does not wrong any individual. He has fixed Rules and Regulations of life because it was demand of His Skill. Whosoever will commit against His prescribed Rules and Regulations, will be punished.

It is commanded: No work is unarranged in Our Court. As We have prescribed Laws of life for other things, like this, We have established Laws of mankind’s life too. Our prophets (peace be upon them) are sent in the world for explaining those Laws, so that no one may say that they were slain unknowingly. While the Laws have been proclaimed by reliable sources then apology of ignorance will not be heard. And whoever will oppose the proclamation, punishment for him has been determined which will be given to him. And that punishment will be according to personal circumstances, current affairs and nature of the crime. Such punishment cannot be called “Oppression”.

The guilty tyrannizes on his soul himself that he breaks the prescribed Law intentionally after its determination. After that, state of those, who choose others as supporters instead of Allaah Almighty, has been caused to understand by a simile. And that simile is of “‘Ankabuut” (The Spider), due to which this Chapter has been named as “‘Al-‘Ankabuut”.

A hurricane sent by Allah

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

40b. of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, 40b.  Faminhum-man  ‘arsalNaa  ‘alayhi  haasibaa.  Wa  minhum-man  ‘akhazat-hus-Sayhah.  Wa  minhum-man  khasafNaa  bihil-‘arz.

Commentary

Haasiban – (a hurricane, a storm of stones), origin of this word is hasaba, from which the word hasbaa-‘a has been derived. It means “Hard small pebbles and stones”. Haasib means “the wind which causes to rain pebbles”.

It was commanded earlier: Those people were in delusion, who got ready to disobey their Lord, that their wealth and dignity would save them from every calamity. They had forgotten that power of any other cannot be useful before the Power of Allaah Almighty. We gave them a respite that haply they wince from the dreams of ignorance, use their sense and choose the way of Our obedience. But when they did not refrain in any way, then We sent any such disaster separately on every folk which was suitable for them according to their environments. Upon some of them, We sent a storm of pebbles by fast winds – as the folks of Lot (peace be upon him) and Aad. Some were destroyed by dreadful thunder – as the folks of Thamuud and Midian. And some were swamped in the earth as Korah (Qaaruun– to whom Allaah caused the earth to swallow).

From it, the Idolaters of Makkah and all those, who consider themselves most powerful, should understand that Allaah Almighty is The Most Powerful. If the entire powerful people of the world are gathered at one place and they make up their mind to oppose Allaah Almighty, even then they cannot win from Him. They have been taken in from that respite which has been given to them that they are all in all. Whereas the purpose of giving them a respite is that they should become conscious who desire, otherwise when the Time will reach, they will be destroyed.
