Choosing sinful professions

Chapter “’Ankabuut”- (The Spider) – 29

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 (I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

 

  وَإِلَىٰ مَدْيَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا فَقَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱرْجُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْءَاخِرَ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ 36  فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَٰثِمِينَ 37

36.  And unto Midian We sent Shu’eyb, their brother; then he said; O my people! Serve Allah, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.   37.  But they denied him, so the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place.

36.  Wa  ‘ilaa  Madyana  ‘akhaahum  Shu-‘ayban,  faqaala  yaaqawmi’-budUllaaha  warjul-Yawmal-‘Aakhira  wa  laa  ta’-saw  fil-‘arzi  mufsidiin.   37.  Fakazzabuuhu  fa-‘akhazat-humur-rajfatu  fa-‘asbahuu  fii  daarihim  jaasimiin.

Commentary

 

It is commanded: Like this, the people of Midian forgot their Creator and the Sustainer entirely. They had imagined erroneously, like them who went astray, that they had power to do according to their will, and none could inquire from them.

 

The result was that those, who were more clever and awake in senses, began to trouble the simple people. When evil comes upon mankind, first of all he forgets Allaah Almighty and does not believe in the Day of Resurrection. It is the root of all depravities. One should fear that person like fear of any ravenous; who does not fear Allaah Almighty. Not known when and what will he do.

 

People of Midian gripped up their loins for robbing, acting dishonestly, deceiving, weighing less than the standard measure, borrowing and lending money on interest etc. were their ordinary professions. They denied Allaah Almighty, forgot the Day of Judgment and began to adore trees etc.

 

When Prophet Shu’ayb (peace be upon him) caused to understand them, they did not care. At last very dreadful earthquake came which seized them, and they were seen fallen prone corpses in the morning within their homes.

The defiantly disobedient people

Chapter “’Ankabuut”- (The Spider) – 29

 إِنَّا مُنَجُّوكَ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَكَ كَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ 33b  إِنَّا مُنزِلُونَ عَلَىٰٓ أَهْلِ هَٰذِهِ ٱلْقَرْيَةِ رِجْزًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ 34  وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَا مِنْهَآ ءَايَةًۢ بَيِّنَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ 35

33b.   Lo! We are to deliver thee and thy household, (all) save thy wife, who is of those who stay behind.   34.  Lo! We are about to bring down upon the folk of this township a fury from the sky because they are evil-livers.   35.  And verily of that We have left a clear Sign for people who have sense.

33b.  ‘Innaa  munajjuuka  wa  ‘ahlaka  ‘illamra-‘ataka  kaanat  minal-gaabiriin.   34.  ‘Innaa  munziluuna  ‘alaaa  ‘ahli  haazihil-qaryati  Rijzam-minas-samaaa-‘i  bimaa  kaanuu  yafsuquun.   35.  Wa  laqat-tarakNaa  minhaaa  ‘Aayatam-bayyinatal-liqaw-miny-ya’-qiluun.

Commentary

The Angels (peace be upon them) said: we shall protect you and your family, except your wife; who will remain here behind along with the dwellers of the township. Then we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have become such defiantly disobedient that they have been involved in sodomy openly. They do not hesitate in committing unnatural offence. This thought has gone entirely out from their mind that there is a Law of Conduct for the mankind in the world and they should abide by that Law for their betterment. If they break it then there is no good for them. We are going to torment the wicked people of this township severely because bad presage of their immodesty and evil works has overcast completely upon them. Now surely they will be ruined.

 

Therefore, the Angels (peace be upon them) instructed to Lot (peace be upon him): Leave this township along with your family during the night; before dawning. None of you should turn and look behind. Your wife will remain behind along with the dwellers of the township and she will also be killed along with them.

 

So they went out of the township during the night. Wrath of Allaah Almighty encircled them in the morning and that part of the land was swamped.

 

It is commanded: We have left such Sign of that township which can be seen clearly, so that those take warning from it that the people disobedient to Allaah Almighty used to live here, who were destroyed due to punishment of disobedience. We should escape from evil deeds.
