9.  Wallaziina  ‘aamanuu  wa  ‘amilus-Saalihaati  laNud-khilannahum  fis-Saalihiin.

Commentary

Jaahadaa – (to strive, to compel, to try), meanings of this word have been explained earlier.

It is commanded: O mankind! If your parents endeavor that you should make associate something else with Allaah Almighty, whereas it can never be thought that any other can be a partner of Him, then you should not obey their sayings. Behold! Return of the entire mankind is to Him and then He will inform them about what they used to do.

These two verses of this Chapter were revealed at that time; when the mother of a Companion, named Sa’d bin Abii Waqaas (May Allaah be pleased with him), who was connected with the Idolaters of Makkah, gave up taking food and drinking water after hearing that her son had embraced Islam, and she said: I shall neither take food and nor drink water till my son (Sa’d) will not leave Islam (God forbid), whether I die.

It was commanded in these verses: You should not obey your parents if they endeavor to make you associate with Allaah Almighty. However He has enjoined upon man goodness to parents. The fact is that nothing is more wrong than ascribing plurality to Allaah Almighty. If your parents strive to make you join with Him that of which you have no knowledge, then you should not care in their obedience. After that it is commanded: Those who will believe i.e. will not ascribe any partner with Allaah Almighty; and will do righteous deeds – We will surely admit them among the righteous (into Paradise).

8a.  Wa  wassayNal-‘insaana  bi-waalidayhi  husnaa.

Commentary

LaNu-kaffiranna – (We shall remove, We will surely remit), this word has come out from takfiir, which has been derived from kafara. Kafara means “to hide, to conceal”. Takfiir means “to finish, to remove”. A word kaffaaratun is from the same origin, which means “the thing which perishes the sign of a sin”.

It is commanded: We are not necessitous of your deeds. Whatever you will do good, that will be good only for yourselves. But good deeds will be useful then, when you will be a Believer also along with the good works. Without Belief, good deeds will not be of use on the Day of Resurrection. However, those who will believe and do good works along with Belief, We shall remove their sins from them, and in exchange of their obedience, We shall give them gifts and honor. The same obedience is the best work, and by means of it, retribution of all good works will be given.

Obedience is a sign of Belief. And the Belief is the actual thing, which makes a man deserving the reward of good deeds. Mankind should consider that only Allaah Almighty is his God and Worshiped. And he should associate nothing with Him by saying of any other. Even, if the parents compel to ascribe plurality to Allaah Almighty, he should not obey their saying. It is called Unity (Oneness of God), which has been explained in the next verse.

It is commanded: Behold! We have enjoined on man kindness to parents.
