5.  Man  kaana  yarjuu  liqaaa-‘Allaahi  fa-‘inna  ‘ajalAllaahi  la-‘aat.  Wa  Huwas-Samii-‘ul-‘Aliim.

6.  Wa  man-  jaahada  fa-‘innamaa  yujaahidu  linafsih.  ‘InnAllaaha  la-Ganiyyun  ‘anil-‘aalamiin.

Commentary

Jaahada – (strive), this word is from jihaadun, which has been derived from jahada. Jahad means “labor”. Jihaadun and mujaahidah means “to try and strive, to work hard”.

In the previous verses, those people were addressed who had been suffering from many afflictions; imposed by Disbelievers of Makkah; due to believing in the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). They were commanded: It is a trial of your Belief.

In these verses, Idolaters of Makkah are being addressed: You should not consider that your violence and tyrannies upon the Muslims will continue and they will bear constantly. If you think that you will run away from Our access, then you are at wrong. And due to your oppressions, you will be entangled in a great calamity.

After that, it is commanded: Whosoever has been enduring afflictions at this time for the purpose that he would have to be present on a Day before Allaah Almighty, and if he endured these temporary misfortunes of this world for gaining His pleasure, then he will not have to endure harder than these difficulties on the Day of Resurrection. And if he remained steadfast, he will be in ease and comfort as retaliation. He should remember it that surely the Day of Judgment will come and he would have to be present before Allaah Almighty. He hears and knows entire matters of every individual. Certainly it is good for him who works hard in the Path of Allaah Almighty. He does not care whether any person obeys His Commandment or disobeys.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

1.  Alif.Laam.Miim.

2.  Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, we believe, and will not be tested with affliction?

3.  And lo! We tested those who were before them. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign.

1.  ‘Alif-Laaam-Miiim.

2.  ‘A-hasiban-naasu  ‘any-yutrakuuu  ‘any-yaquuluuu  ‘aamannaa  wa  hum  laa  yuftanuun.

3.  Wa  laqad  fatan-Nallaziina  min-qablihim  falaYa’-laman-nAllaahullaziina  sadaquu  wa  laYa’-lamannal-kaazibiin.

Commentary

Laa  yuftanuuna – (will not be tried), origin of this word is fatanah, which means “examination, test”. The words fatnun and futuunun have also come out from the same which mean “to try or test, to prove”. Fatannaa is Past Tense from the same.

LaYa’-lamanna – (He will surely know, make evident), this word is from ’alama, which means “to know, to make evident”.

It is commanded: This thought of the people that “we disclosed our belief with our tongues, so we shall be left, and we shall deserve that reward which has been fixed for the Believers”, is wrong. Those, who say themselves Believers by their tongues, will be tested. They will be liable to perform some duties and then it will be observed that whether they fulfilled their responsibilities or otherwise. The reward of Belief will be given to him who will do his duty correctly. Giving reward depends on success in the test.

It is commanded: We certainly tested the ancient people who were before them and used to claim that they were Believers. Those deserved reward who passed the test, because without test the truthful cannot be separated from the liars. And it is compulsory that both groups should be separated from each other before giving retribution. For example, an acquainted Teacher knows all the students of his class that who of them deserves to be promoted and who should be declared “Fail”. But his such knowledge is still abridged till he does not test all students finally. There is no rule to promote any candidate without examination. However after the examination, both parties will come forth separately and clearly. This is a thorough knowledge, on account of which successful candidates will be promoted.
