Commentary

When a man is entangled in any affliction, he becomes repentant seriously. But after passing some time, he forgets every such confusion. Then he learns also by observing the condition of others, but only for a few days. Therefore when Korah was being caused to swallow in the earth along with every such thing which belonged to him i.e. his treasures and home, then eyes of those people opened who were desirous of prosperity and wealth like Korah till yesterday and they said: We misunderstood that the actual thing was greatness, wealth and property. It is a great favor of Allaah Almighty that He saved us from being caused to swallow. Otherwise we also would have gone down the earth as it happened with Korah. Now we have come to know that the people, who disbelieve in Allaah Almighty, do not prosper.

Then it is commanded: The matter is the same which you have been saying that dignity, wealth and property etc. of this world are nothing but only for a few days. The actual thing is the Hereafter. Rest and comfort of the Day of Resurrection will be perpetual. Listen to carefully! The Abode of that Day is forever which Allaah Almighty assigns to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth and escape from corruption, because it is the root of corruption that a man or any group of men desire to increase their worldly wealth than others. The End of those people will be good and they will get success; who have not been involved in the calamity of becoming greater than others, but they escape from wicked deeds due to fear of Allaah Almighty, choose humiliation and humbleness.

81.  So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling-place. Then he had no host to help him against Allah, nor was he of those who can save themselves.

82a.  And morning found those who had coveted his place but yesterday saying: Ah, well a day! Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will of His slaves and straiteneth it (for whom He will).

81.  FakhasafNaa  bihii  wa  bidaarihil-‘arz.  Famaa  kaana  lahuu  min-  fi-‘atiny-yansuruunahuu  min  duuNillaahi  wa  maa  kaana  minal-muntasiriin.

Commentary

FakhasafNaa – {We caused (the earth) to swallow}, it is in Past Tense from the word khasaf, which means “to cause to swallow”.

Fi-‘atin – (host, company),

Wayka-‘anna – (Ah, we understood now),

Korah could not understand due to haughtiness of his wealth that he was not the person who would have power over the universe, but That is Allaah Almighty. There is no one who may say something before Him without His permission. Qarun was an unfortunate person. As he used to reproach other common people, he wrangled also with Moses (peace be upon him).

It is commanded: We caused the earth to swallow him along with his treasures and his home. Then neither his supporters could save him and nor he himself could escape. It is true that everything is helpless before Allaah Almighty. When those people who were desirous of wealth yesterday and saying: Ah, would that we had the like of what has been given to Korah, they began to say, “Oh! It was the matter that Allaah Almighty extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it from whom He wills. Riches are not the signs of it that the rich people are liked also by Allaah Almighty.
