(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)
48. And there were in the city nine persons who made mischief in the land and reformed not.
49. They said: Swear one to another by Allah that we verily will attack him and his household by night, and afterward we will surely say unto his heir: We witnessed not the destruction of his household; and lo! we are truthtellers. |
48. Wa kaana fil-madiinati tis-‘atu rahtiny-yufsiduuna fil-‘arzi wa laa yuslihuun.
49. Qaaluu taqaasamuu Billaahi lanubayyi-tannahuu wa ‘ahlahuu summa lanaquulanna li-waliyyihii maa shahidnaa mahlika ‘ahlihii wa ‘innaa lasaadiquun. |
Commentary
Lanubayyi-tannahuu – (we will kill him by night), this word has come out from nubayyitu, which has been derived from tab-yiit. Tab-yiit means “to do any work by night”. The word bayyata (past tense of the same) has passed in 4th Chapter, where it meant “secret counseling”. Here it aims “to attack unawares by night”.
When evil comes upon any nation, some such mischievous people grow into it who have to do nothing but to trouble others. Their main objects are beating and striking, plundering and robbing, cheating and deceiving, bloodshed, following own wishes without let or hindrance, hating and disgracing righteous people etc.
It is commanded: There were nine great rascal persons in Hajar City of Thamud who had made their separate groups and who used to cause corruption and make mischief in the land instead of amending its affairs. They were gathered at a place for making a decision. They said: Let us take a mutual oath by Allaah that we will attack and kill Salih (peace be upon him) by night, him and his family. Then if any of his executors claimed of bloodshed, we will belie clearly; saying: we do neither know and nor did we witness their destruction. We were not present at the spot to see.
