Causing corruption in the land

Chapter Naml”- (The Ant) – 27

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

48.  And there were in the city nine persons who made mischief in the land and reformed not.

49.  They said: Swear one to another by Allah that we verily will attack him and his household by night, and afterward we will surely say unto his heir: We witnessed not the destruction of his household; and lo! we are truthtellers.

48.  Wa  kaana  fil-madiinati  tis-‘atu  rahtiny-yufsiduuna  fil-‘arzi  wa  laa  yuslihuun.

49.  Qaaluu  taqaasamuu  Billaahi  lanubayyi-tannahuu  wa  ‘ahlahuu  summa  lanaquulanna  li-waliyyihii  maa  shahidnaa  mahlika  ‘ahlihii  wa  ‘innaa  lasaadiquun.

Commentary

Lanubayyi-tannahuu – (we will kill him by night), this word has come out from nubayyitu, which has been derived from tab-yiit. Tab-yiit means “to do any work by night”. The word bayyata (past tense of the same) has passed in 4th Chapter, where it meant “secret counseling”. Here it aims “to attack unawares by night”.

When evil comes upon any nation, some such mischievous people grow into it who have to do nothing but to trouble others. Their main objects are beating and striking, plundering and robbing, cheating and deceiving, bloodshed, following own wishes without let or hindrance, hating and disgracing righteous people etc.

It is commanded: There were nine great rascal persons in Hajar City of Thamud who had made their separate groups and who used to cause corruption and make mischief in the land instead of amending its affairs. They were gathered at a place for making a decision. They said: Let us take a mutual oath by Allaah that we will attack and kill Salih (peace be upon him) by night, him and his family. Then if any of his executors claimed of bloodshed, we will belie clearly; saying: we do neither know and nor did we witness their destruction. We were not present at the spot to see.

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

لَوْلَا تَسْتَغْفِرُونَ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ 46b  قَالُوا۟ ٱطَّيَّرْنَا بِكَ وَبِمَن مَّعَكَ قَالَ طَٰٓئِرُكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ تُفْتَنُونَ 47

46b.  Why do ye not ask pardon of Allah, that ye may receive mercy?

47.  They said: We augur evil of thee and those with thee. He said: Your evil augury is with Allah. Nay, but ye are folk that are being tested.

46b.  Law-laa  tastag-firuu-nAllaaha  la-‘allakum  turhamuun.

47.  Qaalut-tayyarnaa  bika  wa  bimam-ma-‘ak.  Qaala  taaa-‘irukum  ‘indAllaahi  bal-  ‘antum  qawmun-  tuftanuun.

Commentary

‘It-tayyarnaa – {we considered a bad omen, we guessed that (you) were unfortunate}, it is past tense from the word ‘ittayyirun, origin of which is tayr. Tayr means “to fly”. Then from the word taa-‘ir, people began to take omen of bad presage, because people of Arab used to take bad omen from way of flying of the birds. The word ‘ittayyarun is actually tatayyarun, the aim from which is “to consider ‘ill-omened.

Tuftanuuna – {(you) are being tested}, it has been derived from fitnah, which means “mischief, sedition, temptation etc.”

Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was saying to the people of his folk: you had to fear from the wrath of Allaah Almighty, abstain from evil deeds and seek His forgiveness from old wicked deeds. That way, you would have to hope for His mercy upon yourselves, but you began to rebel and ask for doom forthwith.

The people of the folk replied after hearing from the Prophet: O Salih (peace be upon him): we have been greatly worried due to you. We consider that you are ill-omened. You have sown dissension among our people. Pleasantness of life has become affliction. The people have become enemies of one another. Business and trade has been decreasing. Jollity and joke have been finished.

Salih (peace be upon him) said: This is unluckiness of your own misdeeds. These entire calamities are result of your wicked acts. Allaah Almighty has ensnared you in afflictions due to your disbelief; that whether you repent or otherwise?
