41.  Hast thou not seen that Allah, He it is Whom all who are in the heavens and the earth praise, and the birds in their flight? Each one knoweth verily its worship and its praise. And Allah is Aware of what they do.

42.  Ant unto Allah belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, and unto Allah is the journeying.

42.  Wa  Lillaahi  Mulkus-samaa-waati  wal-‘arz.  Wa  ‘ilAllaahil-masiir.

Commentary

Saaaffaat – (spread in flight, expanded), this word is plural of saaafatun, which is the Subject Feminine from saffun. It means “to spread with arrangement”. Here it aims “wings of the birds spread in flight”.

Maximum people consider that doing good works is useful. They themselves adopt sympathy, well-wishing for others, bestowing, justice, charity, alms giving, good turn and virtue etc. and guide others too to do these works. Along with it also they abstain from doing wrong and prevent others. But they think that having belief in Allaah almighty is not necessary. Some are the people who neither themselves do good works, nor abstain from wrong deeds and nor believe in Allaah Almighty. Concerning both above mentioned groups, it has been described that the works of the first kind of people will be useless for them after death, and the people of second kind have been entangled in the darknesses. They will be entangled in the darkness always.

Remaining those people who are Believers, they do good works and abstain from wrong deeds. They will be bestowed with good retaliation.

After that, it is commanded: What has happened with those people? Does it not strike to them that everything of the world has been disclosing the Greatness of Allaah Almighty in their own languages and tongues, and those are engaged in Allaah’s worship and praise? The birds have been extolling Him by spreading their wings. Why the mankind is careless in this matter? He should understand it carefully that Allaah Almighty knows his entire acts and he/she cannot escape from Him. The Sovereignty in the heavens and the earth is of Allaah Almighty only and to Him is the destination.

Commentary

Lujjiyyin – (abysmal, bottomless, unfathomable water).

There was description concerning those disbelievers, in the previous verse, who do good works according to their credence and consider that those works would be sufficient for their deliverance. Allaah Almighty commanded for such people: Because they do not have belief in Him, therefore their good works will be entirely useless. And Allaah Almighty will reckon their accounts immediately.

It has been commanded in this verse: The disbelievers who do not make distinction in good and evil works and have been involved in worldly joys, their condition is very terrible. Darknesses have been crowding upon them plait by plait, as deep sea in which, one darkness is of water’s depth, in addition darkness of waves’ storm which is covered by waves, upon which are waves. Moreover upon the darknesses of the dashing of waves, layers of clouds have been overcastting. Then the time of night, in short, darkness upon the darkness have been spreading everywhere. When one puts out his hand therein, he hardly can see it. If he raises his hand and brings it before his eyes, may not see it due to darkness that where his hand is. On the whole, he gets no reflection of light from anywhere. Source of light is Allaah Almighty only. Whoever became careless from this side, can get no light. Until the heart of the mankind does not believe in Allaah Almighty and He does not illuminate it, the light cannot be bestowed to him.

Commentary

Qii-‘atin – (a mirage, an optical illusion, presenting an image of water in sandy deserts or elevating objects in the air), this word is plural of qaa-‘un, which means “sandy field”. In such field the sand glitters and it seems that there is water at distance.

It was described in the previous verse that those Masaajid are places of the appearance of the Light of Allaah Almighty, where His worshiper slaves are present during the times of morning and evening for His remembrance. And they do not forget Allaah Almighty by being entangled in worldly matters. They fear the Day of Resurrection and abide by His all commandments. Good remuneration of their good deeds will be given to them. Besides this Allaah Almighty will bestow unto them sufficient by His Bounty.

Concerning those people has been described in this verse who do not believe in Allaah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Such people who consider that they have been doing good works, apparently it seems that those are good works which shine very much from away, but its brightness is like mirage, as a thirsty sees the sand at distance but considers that it is water; and he runs towards that direction for quenching his thirst, but when he reaches there, does not find any water, and he becomes senseless. Along with the same he is seized by Allaah’s prescribed Law of Retaliation. Allaah Almighty is present everywhere. He manifests the entire reality of his works which he did; considering good. And He reckons swiftly his accounts, because He is very Swift at reckoning.

Commentary

Previously, it was commanded: Worshiper slaves of Allaah Almighty attend regularly the houses of worship, which have been built by His Commandment. They exalt Allah Almighty in the morning and evening. The works of the world do not prevent them from being present and adoring at prescribed times and remembrance of Allaah Almighty.

In this verse, it is commanded: They fear when they recollect that on a Day, they would have to give an account of their deeds, being present before Allaah Almighty. On that Day, hearts of the people will be changed. Their entire doubts will be removed, and then they will have belief that Allaah Almighty is True. There is no Master save Him. Decision of our luck is in His Hands. Those people will be punished who disobeyed His commandments due to being involved in worldly matters. And Allaah Almighty will reward the obedient and the believers according to the best of what they did.

It is commanded: These slaves of Allaah Almighty, who believed in Him and used to live in the world under His obedience, will find reward of their good works on that Day. Moreover, Allaah Almighty will bestow upon them extra blessings by His Grace. Nothing is deficient in His Court. He will give uncountable rewards to whom He will, and there is no limit or end of His Bounty. However every individual has his/her own vase and will get according to own capacity.

Commentary

Tulhii – (beguiles, makes careless, turns away), origin of this word is ‘il-haa-‘un, which has come out from la-ha-wa – to mislead, to play the trick, to deceive.

‘Aasaalun – (in the evenings), it is plural of ‘asiil, which is used in Arabic language for all such times, which begin with effect from setting of the sun till rising early in the morning. The aim from the word ‘aasaalun is, “its different parts”. In reality, the Light of Allaah Almighty has been spreading all around in the heavens and in the earth, but particular places of its appearance are those where complete cleanliness, neatness and elegance is found.

In this part of the verse, it is commanded: those mosques (Masaajid) are particular places of the appearance of the Light which are constructed by means of Prophets (peace be upon them) and Allaah’s virtuous slaves, and it has been commanded that after their construction, those should be preserved, looked after and treated with respect. And those houses should be kept clean and clear from impurity and thickness, and the name of Allaah Almighty should be remembered therein. So those slaves of Allaah Almighty, who seek His pleasure, assemble for His congregational worship, hymn and praise of Him. First time of their gathering is early in the morning, and then with effect from afternoon to before next day’s morning. In the morn (guduwwi) come all Fajr to before Zuhar compulsory and voluntary prayers, but in the evening (‘aasaal) come all Zuhar to before next day’s Fajr – compulsory and voluntary prayers, as Zuhar, ‘Asr, Magrib, ‘Ishaa’ compulsory (Farz) prayers including voluntary prayers as Nafl and Tahajjad etc.

Slaves of Allaah Almighty spare their times from their business and other works for compulsory and aggregation prayers and offer voluntary prayers according to availability of times. Moreover they pay the poor-due regularly for the pleasure of Allaah Almighty. No business or engagement can prevent them from the adoration of Allaah Almighty and performing their duties

Commentary

Which oil is gotten from this tree of olive, is so much clean and transparent that it seems as it will begin to shine up itself and there will be no need of any Lucifer for kindling it. It is obvious that when Lucifer will be given to the lamp of such oil, that will be illuminated more than normal, and its light will increase upon the light.

Like this, the Light of Allaah Almighty has been spreading all over the world. Everything is brilliant with His Light. But on the heart of the mankind, darkness and duskiness of evil desires and sins have been spreading as much that he is unable to attain this Light. Allaah Almighty guides by His Grace unto His Light whom He wills. He is fully Aware of the condition of every individual and knows the talents of all people.

Similitudes have been described in Holy Qur’an for causing to understand the human beings about the state of His Light, so that the person, who has sense, may understand it that the mankind himself is a pattern of the entire world. As the Light of Allaah Almighty has been spreading in the entire world, like this, into the mankind also; His Light has been filled.

Body of every mankind is as a niche wherein there is a bright lamp of the Light of Allaah Almighty. If that lamp is shown swift Light of Holy Qur’an then nowhere is the example of that Light. The same Light has been shown to the mankind by the last Messenger of Allaah Almighty; Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).
