Commentary

‘Asaa-tiiru – (fables), this word is plural of ‘ustuuratun, which has been derived from satara. Satar means “to draw a line”. ‘Ustuuratun means “the story which has been being told since long”. Mankind is a slave to old customs and rites and desires to behave as the ancient people had already been conducting. He repeats often the same which old people used to do. There are very less people who use their sense.

Holy Qur’an says: you should not consider that your forefathers were right in all matters. Many matters from those are wrong or those are changed in process of time from right to wrong.

It is commanded: these people who have been denying concerning the life of the mankind after death, is not any new thing. Those people who passed away before them used to say also the same. When the Prophets (peace be upon them) caused to understand them that after causing death to the human beings Allaah Almighty will give them life again, then they began to say: we are unable to understand that when a person is died, his flesh is dissolved and wasted, only skeleton of bones is remainder, which is only for some more days and it will also be finished, then how the mankind will come to life again and how will he get up. Such matters are being described to us, which are not reasonable (Let us flee to God). The same were told to our ancestors also before us. These were fabricated by some ancient people and are baseless. Now the same are being repeated again and again. If these fables were true; then ever a heap of dust would have become a living mankind and stand before us.

Commentary

Holy Qur’an desires to show the mankind that his relationships with the world and with the people of the world will become correct and he personally will gain his entire end at that time when he will come to know Allaah Almighty and His epithets correctly. Without it, he should not have any hope that he will pass actual successful life in the world and will deserve ease and comfort after death too. It is a strange thing that the mankind performs every work, but does not know Allaah Almighty. And he does not admit that after death he will be reproduced. It is being informed to him that he has eyes but does not use them properly, otherwise it is visible clearly that Who did give power of looking, hearing and understanding to the human being?

It is being commanded in this verse that Allaah Almighty is He Who gave you ears, eyes and hearts so that you may use them properly. But you do not use them correctly. You use their power at improper places. You should listen to the commandments of Allaah Almighty, behold the tokens of His omnipotence and believe in Him. It is the proper use of these three things. Allaah Almighty did spread you everywhere in the world, then you all will be gathered and produced before Him. He causes death and He gives life. One famous portent of His omnipotence is that He has divided the Time in two parts –Day and Night. To guess concerning the tokens of His Omnipotence, causing death and reproducing, bringing day after night and night after day are sufficient. You should understand from it that He can bring you again to life after death. There is no reason of any doubt in it.
