The End of the Calf

Chapter TAA-HAASurah – 20)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

97.  (Moses) said: Then go! And lo! In this life it is for thee to say: Touch me not! And lo! There is for thee another tryst which canst not be averted from thee. And look upon thy god of which thou hast remained a votary. Verily we will burn it and will scatter its dust over the sea. 97.  Qaala  fazhab  fa-‘inna  laka  fil-hayaati  ‘an-  taquula  “Laa  Misaas”,  wa  ‘inna  laka  maw-‘idal-lan-  tukhlafah.  Wanzur  ‘ilaaa  ‘ilaahi-kallazii  zalta  ‘alayhi  ‘aakifaa.  Lanuharri-qannahuu  summa  lanansi-fannahuu  fil-yammi  nasfaa.

Commentary

Nasfun – (to scatter little by little), the word “lanansi-fanna” is also from the same origin.

Samirii confessed that after looking sufficient useless gold, he himself thought that a calf should be made and put in it that handful clay which was seized from the footsteps of the Angel. When he invented a calf, he saw an astonishing wonder by mixing up those both things (gold and clay) that a voice as of living calf began to come out from the idol of self-made calf. Then he excited the Children of Israel for adoration of the calf. It was very capital offence.

Today too, those people should learn from it; who wish to turn the people unto their baseless thoughts covered with religious color; who desire to amend the commandments mentioned in Holy Qur’an and Hadith {Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)}.

Moses (peace be upon him) commanded: It is your punishment that you should continue saying to the people during your entire worldly life “Behold! Touch me not! He will be suffering from fever who will touch me!” It is the punishment of this life. Moreover, there is another promise for you which cannot be averted from you, that is the punishment of the Day of Resurrection. And your this adored (the calf) will be broken and burnt before your eyes and we will scatter its dust over the sea, so that its name and mark is removed.

Verily, new traditions and customs; included in the religion by the advise of any person; should be extirpated like this.

Why did you commit such unlawful act?

Chapter TAA-HAASurah – 20)

(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

95.  (Moses) said: And what hast thou to say, O Saamirii?

96.  He said: I perceived what they perceived not, so I seized a handful from the footsteps of the Messenger, and then threw it in; and thus my soul commended to me.

95.  Qaala  famaa  khatbuka  Yaa-Saamiriyy.

96.  Qaala  basurtu  bimaa  lam  yabsuruu  bihii  faqabaztu  qab-zatam-min  ‘asarir-Rasuuli  fa-nabaztuhaa  wa  kazaalika  saw-walat  lii  nafsii.

Commentary

Khatbun – (plan), this word has already passed. It means “state, scheme, thought, and work etc. according to circumstances.

Saw-walat – (induced, commended, advised), it is past tense from the word “tas-wiil”, which means “to induce, to allure, to cause to tend”. This word has passed in Surah Joseph (Chapter 12).

When Aaron (peace be upon him) explained before Moses (peace be upon him) about his problem, he released him and turned unto Saamirii. Moses (peace be upon him) asked from him: Why did you commit such unlawful act? And what was in your mind that you misled them? Saamirii said: When a path appeared for us in the Sea and we began to travel on that path, at that time I saw “A Man” in front of me who was of wonderful pomp. I understood that he was an Angel; sent by Allaah Almighty; for our help. I picked silently a handful clay from beneath his feet. Then I did put that clay in the gold after melting it and made a calf from it. Then I observed that a sound began to come out from the calf like cattle having life.

After that, it came in my mind that the fabricated calf was worthy of worship, so I ordered the people: Worship it!

This statement of Saamirii was his acceptance that only he was responsible of spreading polytheism entirely. Verily those people are very dangerous who want to spread their false thoughts after writing in the religious teachings and cause to admit from the people.
