Pieces of iron for completion of wall

Chapter Kahf (The Cave) – 18

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

 

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّى فِيهِ رَبِّى خَيْرٌفَأَعِينُونِى بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا 95

 ءَاتُونِى زُبَرَ ٱلْحَدِيدِ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا سَاوَىٰ بَيْنَ ٱلصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ ٱنفُخُوا۟ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَعَلَهُۥ نَارًا قَالَ ءَاتُونِىٓأُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْرًا 96

 

95.  He said: That wherein my Lord hath established me is better (than your tribute). Do but help me with strength (of men), I will set between you and them a bank.

 

96.  Give me pieces of iron – till, when he had leveled up (the gap) between the cliffs, he said: Blow! – till, when he had made it a fire, he said: Bring me molten copper to pour thereon.

95.  Qaala  maa  makkannii  fiihi  Rabbii  khayrun-  Fa-‘a-‘iinuunii  bi-quwwatin  ‘aj-‘al  baynakum  wa  baynahum  radmaa.

 

96.  ‘Aatuunii  zubaral-hadiid.  Hattaaa  ‘izaa  saawaa  baynas-sadafayni  qaalan-fukhuu.  Hattaaa  ‘izaa  ja-‘alahuu  naaran,  qaala  ‘aatuuniii  ‘ufrig  ‘alayhi  qitraa.

 

Commentary

 

Makkannii – (established me, gave me power), actually this word is makkananii. By contraction of the letter (one) “n” into another “n”, it has become “makkannii”. Makkana is a past tense from the word tamkiin, origin of which is “ma-ka-na”. makkannatun means “strength, power”. Tamkiin means “to strengthen”.

 

Radmun – (it aims “a thick bank and strong wall”).

 

Zubarun – {pieces (of iron), planks), it is plural of zubratun, which means “a wide and broad piece”.

 

Saawaa – {(he) leveled up (the gap)}, it is also past tense from the word musaawaatun, origin of which is “sa-wa-‘a”. sawaaa-‘un means “leveled, equal, abreast”. Musaawaat means “to match, to level, to adjust”.

 

Sadafayni – it is plural of sadafun which means “two things at equal height but having gap between them”.

 

‘Un-fukhuu – (Blow!), it is a word of command from “nafakhun”, nafakhun means “to set on fire, to blow”. Here it aims “to fan the fire strongly”.

 

During the third stage of the journey, Alexander constructed a wall at open place between the two high peaks of the mountain; heights of which were at the equal level. The wall was constructed by putting the sheets of iron upon one another and it reached the level of both mountain peaks. Wooden pieces were filled between the iron planks like bricks and then they set on fire and fanned the flames. When the iron became hot; then the molten copper was poured on the iron planks; which filled the gaps in between the iron pieces. Goods and labor were provided by the local people. Remaining work was performed by Dhu’l-Qarneyn.

Chapter Kahf (The Cave) – 18

ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا 92

 حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ ٱلسَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَّا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا 93

 قَالُوا۟ يَٰذَاٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجًا عَلَىٰٓ أَن تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدًّا 94

 

92.  Thereafter he set forth on another course.

 

93.  Till, when he came between the two mountains, he found upon their hither side a folk that scarce could understand a saying.

 

94.  They said: O Dhu’l-Qarneyn! Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them?

92.  Summa  ‘atba-‘a  sababaa.

 

93.  Hattaa  ‘izaa  balaga  bay-nas-saddayni  wajada  min-  duu-nihimaa  qawmal-laa  yakaa-duuna  yafqahuuna  qawlaa.

 

94.  Qaaluu  yaa-Zal-Qarnayni  ‘inna  Ya’-juuja  wa  Ma’-juuja  mufsiduuna  fil-‘arzi  fahal  naj-‘alu  laka  kharjan  ‘alaaa  ‘an-  taj-‘ala  baynanaa  wa  baynahum  saddaa.

 

Commentary

 

Saddayni – (hindrances, preventions, mountains), this word is plural of saddun, which means “to stop, stoppage and restriction”. Here it aims “a high mountain, in the centre of which; a path had been opened. So it seemed that those were two separate mountains. The tellers say that those mountains are at the extremely north side of Turkish Land. Origin of the word saddun is “sa-da-da”.

 

Ya’-juuja  wa  Ma’-juuja – (Gog and Magog), it is told about those both folks that those were two wild and barbarous folks, who used to dwell across the Turkish Border and belonged to the same race. Those people were physically very strong. They used to live on the other side of the mountains and plunder after approaching to this side through the central opened path (between the mountains).

 

Kharjun – (some portion from the wealth, separated for spending, is called kharjun). Most probably, the word “Kharch” has come out in Urdu language from the same. Here it aims “subscription, contribution etc.”

 

After travelling unto East and West, Dhu’l-Qarneyn continued his journey and reached the high mountain, which was situated at the northern border of Turkish country. Due to path in the centre of the mountain, it was considered that those were two separate mountains. The people, who had been dwelling there, were unable to understand the language. An interpreter explained that those people were requesting to close that path by setting a solid barrier between us and them (which was between the mountain), by which the Gog and Magog used to come suddenly and spoil their land, so that they may not come to this side by breaking that barrier. If you do it, it will be your great favor upon us.
